Thread: How much RAM

    How much RAM

I'm going to buy a new gaming laptop. I'll be playing mostly WoW, Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2. The current specs are

    Intel® Core™ i7-3610QM quad core processor
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    6GB DDR3 memory
    750GB 5400 RPM storage
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 670M 3GB with Optimus™

I was wondering if I should upgrade the RAM to 8gb for an extra $60. I Typically play one game at a time and sometimes have a web browser or itunes open. Do I need 8gb or is 6gb enough? Thanks

    6GB is enough for that.

I concur and $60 seems like a lot seeing as you should only need to buy one 4gb stick to get it to 8.

Yeah, you won't even notice the difference, unless you're planning to also edit and encode videos on the same machine, but then you won't really notice the difference as well, it'll be equally bad on 6 or 8 gb.

Thanks everyone! I didn't really want to spend the extra $60 anyway

Pay extra for 7200rpm HDD or 120GB SSD as a boot disc. That 5400rpm HDD will be the biggest bottleneck in it by far.

This, big time. A 5400RPM HDD will make you sad. Very very sad.

$60 for 2 more GB of RAM is RIDICULOUS.

Get a 256GB SSD instead. Actually get a gaming desktop for gaming and a small laptop for laptopping. Total they're probably the same price as a gaming laptop.

He might be on a budget... let's first just get him to SSD-level before suggesting bloody 256GB SSDs.....

He was after all just asking about a $60 price difference originally. >_>

If his laptop only has room for one drive he's not going to do very well with a small one.

For the $60 increase in price for 2GB of RAM, no, I wouldn't. He could up his RAM for like $20 later on if he so desperately needs it.

He really needs a higher level HDD/SSD if anything, which going down to an i5 might be a good move for.

Well I can't afford an SSD, but I'm going to the upgrade the hardrive to a 750GB (7200rpm); Hybrid 8G Serial ATA hard disk drive.

Most 17" and bigger laptops have room for two 2.5" discs, HDD or SSD. Even some 15" laptops do but it's not quite as common.

The laptop is 17'' so they will fit. It cost $100 for the upgrade.
