    Monk popularity

How popular do you think monks will be, maybe after a few months of MoP being out?

  2. #2
Probably just the same as Dk back then. It's a new class, people will want to try it.

There'll be low-level instances and bg's flooded with them and there'll be a LOT of very bad Monks around for quite a while.
It'll tone down eventually, as it did with DKs.

I don't think it will be quite as bad as the "Great DK Infestation" of 2009-2010. I think the main reasons being that monks don't start 15 levels away from level cap and monks aren't looking like they're going to be overpowered like DKs were at release. It will take a real commitment for someone to decide to level a monk rather than just doing it on a whim and realizing that they are juggernauts of destruction.

    Pretty much this.

Deathknight's were gifted amazing gear to level with through most of Outlands, a free(cheap? Can't remember price) mount and were rather OP at release, especially while leveling.

Now, the posts have moved on both ends. Monks need to level to 90 (not 80) and start at level 1 (not 55) with no perks. So I doubt they'll be as popular on release.

Sadly, free RAF levels could prove this statement false.

Well, the monk lore is pretty cool. Also, kung-fu fighting is very popular. Lastly, the class can perform all three roles. Therefore, I foresee a long-term high popularity level.

I imagine they'll be crazy popular at low-levels, with every zone packed to the gills with monks, but it'll dwindle as you get into the higher level zones and especially into the endgame. After six or eight months, it'll die down to what it will probably be throughout the rest of the expansion, as others have said, probably around where DKs are today.

I do intend on leveling one, and if it works out, I'll tank with him at endgame. But you never know.. I might get bored with him in the 70s like I did with my druid, and I'll end up going back to my pally. Who knows.

Probably too popular. I really would like to go Brewmaster as a tank, but given that there will be tons of them I'm almost thinking I'd have better overall prospects if I stuck with my Warrior, because people will be tired of monks.
WoW: Retired Prot Warrior 11/2012, currently playing a Warlock (90 @ 4/26/13) and having some fun in a casual style.
RIFT: Retired 5/2013 due to lack of content and not having guilds able to do the 20-mans.
Also playing The Secret World and having fun slowly in that.

I agree that you will get stuck with a lot of bad monks as tanks in low lvl dungeons. Personally tho if I see a Monk in BoA gear I'm gonna fig he is in it for the long haul and is more likely to know what he/she is doing.

Most raiders will more than likely be lvlin their mains first and then monks a few weeks after. That should make the numbers somewhat consistent the first few months.

I have been hearing rumors RaF isn't allowed on monks at least for the first several weeks.

There is a LOT of all the other classes already so if you end up liking the Monk, go for it. If you are skilled, I'm sure a raid would be happy to take you.

Anyone who has been playing for more than a few months would have no issues getting full heirlooms, so I wouldn't use that as a yardstick for dedication or skill. As far as RaF goes, that is speculation not rumor.

I would say estimates around the DK's is probably accurate. The extra heirlooms + potential RAF boost shouldn't make it much worse then starting at 55. I personally plan to try out the Monk as a new main but mostly because I'm unhappy with where DK's are in MoP.

The four elements, like man alone, are weak. But together they form the strong fifth element: Boron.

I don't get why you guys think most of the monks will be bad. People rolling a monk will be just like everybody else rolling a new class they've never played. Monks only start off with a few abilities like every class and you slowly learn new ones as you level.

The reason why so many dks were bad is because people rolling dks have to learn how to use 55 levels of abilities at once

I don't think they'll be trying the hero class model ever again.

They'll be popular, but not as much as Death Knights. The levelling will burn a lot of people out around the time they hit Outland/Northrend. I think they'll linger somewhere just behind Druids.

Bingo bango bongo. Everyone will be curious about the new class so they will be everywhere for quite a while, just like DKs back in wrath. Eventually people will go back to their old mains or lose interest in the play style at end game so they will then level out. I do look forward to running a 5 man with my mage main and 4 monks (my guildies are fun like that). I can only hope that it will be my mage and 4 pandaren monks. I will lol

Probably not as popular as DKs, Hunters and Paladins. I will bet on there being an insane number of really bad monks around... like DKs in Wotlk.

It'll depend on spec and function.
I'm going for Brewmaster to compare it to my bear tank and then will go into end game MOP with whichever I like better.
Currently if my guid doesn't use me on thursdays, I pick up a Pug raid easily.
I think it will be the same for Mistweavers.
I think BGs may have allot of Windwalkers and Mistweavers, especially in the lower levels.

I think they're going to be very popular - mainly because they can be a tank, DPS, or healer.

The 2 classes that can perform 3 roles are the most popular classes in wow, the Paladin and the Druid. I foresee that the monk will be in the mix of the top 3 classes in wow. Early 5 man dungeons are going to be flooded with monks of every spec.

Very popular I reckon, but I can hazard a guess that after a month or two people will return to their mains as with DK's.

Monks will be popular and soon as people get them into lvl 90 arenas they will see how op monks are atm; And there will be a chain of nerfs over MoP patches. Just like death knights had in wotlk.
