Which Sports are most Popular in your nation?

I'm looking to see which sports are most popular in the nation you reside in.

I'm looking for maybe the top 6 sports. If you can't list all 6 it's fine, just do as many as you can think of.

Please Please Please post your country as well. It's pointless without this information. Also, this thread isn't meant to cause arguments. I'm just looking for a general sense. I'll maybe post some results after a week or two. I also don't want to hear about Soccer is Football, Football is Soccer bullshit. Everyone knows what you mean and we get it. Let's move on.

    For me:

    Canada

    1. Hockey
    2. American Football
    3. Basketball
    4. Golf
    5. Baseball
    6. Football (Soccer)

But I'd say football/baseball are tied here in America, regardless of how popular old fashioned baseball is, and it being a past time and all. I'd say the NFL is massive, and it's a lot more popular to like football.

Baseball has actually taken a pretty big hit. I would say that Basketball and Baseball are 2a. and 2b. And hockey has made a resurgence and definitely needs to be on that list.

    Poland

    1. Soccer
    2. Voleyball
    3. Ski jumping (well it was on the 1st place...but after Adam Małysz retired it is not as popular as in the past )
    4. Handball

For the United States I would say

    1. Football(American)
    2. Basketball
    3. Baseball
    4. NASCAR
    5. Hockey

I'm not really sure about the rankings of 2-4 though. I wish I was born in Canada so I could put hockey as #1

    USA

    1. Football
    2. Baseball
    3. Basketball
    4. Hockey
    5. Soccer
    6. Golf

This is based off of a website, I would say it is pretty accurate. I do wish Lacrosse was more popular here though, it is my favorite sport

For the United States i would have to put it this way:

    1. American Football, college, pro's, don't matter, we love football
    2. Auto Racing, particularly NASCAR, but this also includes other series such as Indy Car, Drag Racing, and the Grand - Am Sports car series, as well as local events at short tracks (Oval tracks less than 1 mile.) all over the country.
    3. Basketball, (Number 1 in the state of Kentucky where I'm from, followed closely by horse racing.)
    4. Baseball

Those are by far the top 4, I don't think anything else really even comes close although some other honorable mentions may include hockey and golf. NASCAR is by and large the largest spectator sport in the country, with the Sprint Cup series drawing 150,000 to 200,000 to almost all 36 races of the season. Football may not draw in quite as many people to a single event, but the start of football season is a huge deal and many teams have fanatical fan-bases. Soccer, or football as its called in the rest of the world oddly enough doesn't even come close to those top four here, games are almost never broadcasted on major networks like ESPN, or FOX Sports. Speaking of which, why do we Americans even call it soccer? Football seems to me like a more appropriate name for it, like the rest of the world seems to realize.

Basketball, Football (American), Baseball, Hockey, Soccer (Euro Football).

Soccer is slowly getting more popular in the US, from what I've heard.

It's a shortening of "Association Football".

American Football is called Football because of two reasons; the ball is a foot long, and back when it was created, you kicked the ball WAY more than the modern era.

    3. Formula 1
    4. Tennis
    5. Swimming

At least, i think so... not much of a sports person here but this is the list if i look at what my family and friend watch or do all the time.

Next to impossible to find ppl that play lacrosse as you go farther west or south in the US. Its too bad it is a good sport.

ESPN did a bit about the net worth of sports teams in the US and of the 50 that made the list every NFL team was on it only a few baseball or basketball teams made that list. While thats not a perfect way to measure what is more popular it would make me believe NFL is leaps and bounds ahead of the others. If the Browns are worth more then multiple teams in your league then there are problems.

Well, in Sweden, top three in regular attendance is:
    1. Football (soccer)
    2. Hockey
    3. Speedway

But in actual popularity, I'm not actually sure about the third spot (football and hockey is 1st and 2nd, respectively), I'd have to say it's a toss-up for the other spots, between sports like:
    Speedway
    Bandy
    Indoor Bandy (also called floorball)
    Handball
    Track and field
Alpine skiing (I think that's the word for it)
    Cross country skiing
    Tennis
    Golf

The way these actually rank, varies a lot by region. Where I live I'd probably rank speedway 3rd and handball 4th, but that's because there are teams in the highest/er divisions.

Can you describe "Bandy" for us?

    Never heard of that.

  20. #20
It's kind of a mix between football and hockey, it's played on ice, it has a small ball (like a baseball I'd say), you use sticks to shoot it, the goals are big and goalkeepers probably have a 1% save percentage (not too fond of it myself, it's mostly played in the northern parts of Sweden). You could also check out the wikipedia page for it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandy
