Game of Thrones books, the magic is downplayed, but the magic they do have in it is clever and pretty cool. Also Lord of the Rings obviously, but only if you don't mind very slow story telling.

The Sovereign Stone trilogy by Margaret Weiss and tracy hickman is quite nice. Also The Death Gate seeies by the same authors. And while both are less ckassic fantasy both involve heavy amounts of magic. Death gate though has more of a pseudo sci fi vibe in that it deals with dimensional travel. But you still get Dwarves,Elves, magic, and other things while most if not all science is restricted to one or two instances of dwarves. Everything else is magic powered.

    The second is called Communion.
The third is called The Citadel.

Since I read them, they have had their covers redone, or rather, they made paperback versions of the books. They also gave them the subtitles. They were just called Part 1 through 3 back then, if I recall correctly.
It might be hard to find new versions of them, my quest has proved rather futile in that matter.
Actually i got them as Paperbacks as a kid and it was seven books(the first six about the length of your average kids book) but yes i too must reccomend them.

Also The Enchanted Forest Chronicles. It starts with Dealing with Dragons and has 4 book a boxset available. It's essentially Shrek in it's spoof style but good fantasy in it's own right as well. The author is Patricia C. Wredw.

Yeah, I like Weis and Hickman a lot too. I think I like the Darksword Trilogy better than the Death Gate series, but both are very good.

    C. S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia has always been a favorite too, although it is probably more geared towards a younger audience.

(and occasionally full blown porn too) That doesn't keep most of his books from being entertaining anyway, but it always makes me feel a bit weirded out afterwards. Also, his many of his books read like they're aimed at slow witted 12 year olds, which makes reading him kind of annoying.

Oddly though, none of that stopped me from reading almost all of his books back in the day. (though aside from the final Incarnations book I haven't read anything new by him in probably 10 years.)

I enjoyed A Wizard of Earthsea myself when I was a teenager, I haven't read the other books in the series but if they are anything like that one, it should be a fine read

I have a problem with Hobb, sure, I like the stories and the originality of them, but the style of writing is really long winded, Ian Irvine is similar, great stories (well, the 2nd series with geomancer as the first book etc is far better) then kinda blabbery writing styles, make you want to skip parts.

D and L Eddings have some great books, Belgariad is cool in a traditional sense, The Elder gods trilogy(?) was also pretty good.

I've always wanted to read the wizard of earthsea books after seeing that amazing sutdio ghibli movie.

Which series of weis and hickman is the one about the void ? I liked that one.

I also like R E Feist and the sword of truth guy, whatever his name is.

Some Authors who's work I've read over the years

    Tolkien
    David Eddings
    Raymond E Feist
    Janny Wurst
    Katharine Kerr
    Robert Jordan
    Terry Pratchett
    Elizabeth Moon
    GRR Martin

Out of those I enjoyed the Wheel of time the most, Pratchett is good fun to, but it's more of a fantasy satire on modern times and not a classic fantasy story teller. Song of Ice and Fire is of course nice as well.

Don't write off A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), while the magic in it is not overt, it is present and as the series progresses more and more of the magic in the universe is shown (trying to avoid spoilers here).

Great fantasy series, thats all i need to say.

    Malazan Books of the Fallen.

I've read nearly everything posted, and some great series were posted (First Law Trilogy by Abercrombie, Mistborn Trilogy), the Malazan Book of the Fallen is easily the best Epic Fantasy series out there, if you are looking for multiple races, multiple wars, multiple realms, and tons of magic and dragons and stories of heroes and villains.

It has been posted in this thread numerous times, but I cannot recommend it enough. It is a finished 10 book cycle, with the author doing some stuff hundreds of thousands of years before and another author (his friend) doing some offshoot stuff. A word of warning though, if you thought LOTR was heavy, Malazan might blow your mind.

Something else you might like are the Dresden Files, which are modern fantasy, but much better than and started before all this vamp-craze crap happened. The Dresden series is an extremely fun read, and although each book is not very long (around 300 pages, compared to the Malazan Books generally being around 1,000 pages), they are worth it and I've read this series and reread it because it is so fun. If you are really into fantasy, the same author, Jim Butcher, did a fantasy series as well, which is pretty much a Roman Legion getting trapped in an alternate world where they learn to tame pokemon. Sounds stupid, but it is actually a very entertaining series with tons of magic in it.

You could try David Gemmell, he wrote some great anti-hero fantasy type stuff. Best to start off with something like Waylander or Legend

everything from r.a salvatore all his books are great especially those about drizzt do urden (saga of the dark elf and dragonworld saga)
also i am not to sure if its outthere in english but it should the Dwarfs (german title die Zwerge) it has 4 books and is in my opinion the best german fantasy book chain

Would like to point out a book from this series: Ah damn, cant remember the name, but it was something along the lines of Last Dwarven Thane or etc.
