I just bought a few tracks of music from someone who has put about about 5-6 albums out for Steam games. They were $200 per song, and that's a fantastic price for stuff like that. The music alone is likely going to run anywhere from $1200-$1600. This does not include the GAME itself, the art, or anything else. Just the music.

Wow, there are alot of people in this thread who just need to lighten up, Who gives a shit if you are(or are not) a dev IRL, this isn't a contest to see which of you can pretend to know more about making games, if he wants to make a game, good on him, you do know that EVERYTHING in the world has to start with an idea, and if someone has the passion for it then it will happen

This is the most off topic i've seen a thread, seriously stop throwing shit at this guy, it's ok to say "it will be harder than you may think" But at least contribute to the OPs actual question

OT, I would like to see a more modern MMO, there are not many of them about that work nicely, would be a nice change!

Find an excuse to let one of these off the chain, and I personally guarantee, the bad guys won't even wanna come out of their caves. Ladies and gentlemen, for your consideration... the Jericho.

It's not that we're "throwing shit" at him, we're trying to tell him that he doesn't know what he's getting himself into. Ideas are a dime a dozen, everyone has an idea,. The OP seems to have convinced himself he'll be able to make an MMO with $500. It would be irresponsible not to tell him to get a clue.
My Cracked articles, writing blog, and Twitter.

The problem with the internet is parallel to its greatest achievement: it has given the little man an outlet where he can be heard. Most of the time however, the little man is a little man because he is not worth hearing.

This guy is obviously trolling. No one is so utterly delusional as to think that $500 is an adequate budget for an MMO, and mentioning the Hero engine is blatantly fishing for reactions. Just move along, nothing to see here.
This is my signature. You will now remember me.

If you want this to work you need to have something.. Use a ouple of weeks/ months on making some ideas for the game how it should be what there should be, what the game is about. Get everything down and draw some ideas/sketches for the different systems how is combat going to work what about pvp how open is the world and so on there is ALOT to think about and do.. Do all this.. and show it .. if people like the idea and so forth you may get donations to be able to hire more people and rly start working on the game..
What you do is.. "Hey guys.. i wanna make a game.. give me money" and when people ask you question you just come up with something..
That is not how it works.. you should have all the basic stuff about the game already done

Need a game set in the 1970s where you can do all those awesome things like your parents said they did back in the 70s

    Politic system.
One guild/person can become mayor of the land and gets some sort of taxes (different currency than ingame).
That guild can then invest on something. Like new bank to city.. over time each different mayor can invest on stuff they want or promised. Like 50% on bank done but other guy suddenly wants to pug 10% to flightpoint. Something simple.

Random legendary drops even from rats. Then again would cause huge grind..even if 0.0001% drop rate from all mobs everywhere.

I always wanted that in MMO's, but I guess they arent there for reason

The difference between people who achieve their dreams and people that don't is that the achievers never listened when someone else told them it was dumb.

I had the same mindset as the OP last year. I formed an idea, recruited people, and we actually got work done. I have a shit ton of concept images that I absolutely love but after a while my team left one by one. Oh well, everyone fails. I still have the concept art and my idea but I dont have any money to develop it. We got as far as designing one of the factions, which I still think are pretty cool.

The fact of the matter is that unless you get people like yourself who are willing to work for free because they really believe in something, its just not going to work if you don't pay them.

My biggest question to you is, and this is crucial, if you don't have any funding, how will you have time to complete the game? Even smaller game studios (i.e. several people who work 8+ hours a day with the game) take well over a year to finish even a singleplayer game. Sure, if you completely isolate yourself from the outside world, only go to work for income and work on the game, you might be able to put as much time in as a regular person working at a studio. Say your job is 9-17, that leaves 6-7 hours of work per weekday if you eat a hasty dinner, and you'd probably need to spend all of your time during the weekend to work aswell.

Even then, if you're working with Hero Engine as you plan, your game will be outdated.

I love crazy ideas, I love people with ambition, but you're in way over your head. Even if you actually manage to create the game, it will be immensely hard for you to actually get any players for it.

The videogame business is one of the harshest businesses in the world. People are laid off and fired all the time, studios get shut down and dreams are crushed due to lack of funding. Yes, there are some anomalies like Minecraft, but the beauty of that game is his unique idea and how he implemented it. You don't even have an idea yet.

Having some fun and attempting to create games on your spare time is cool, I had a friend who did that for a while, but don't expect to actually get a working MMO together. Hell, even Minecraft isn't an MMO, they make you put up your own servers, they just hand you the client and the server program.

Same goes for those who devoted their life to their dream without realizing it was a failed project to begin with. Now they're bankrupt and have nowhere to go, since they don't have a job and no money left, due to pooling it all into their project. Ever seen American Inventor?
