As a Skyrim mage, how do I not inadvertantly kill all my followers?

I've recently gotten back into Skyrim and couldn't find the previous megathread so I thought I'd ask here. I play a destruction mage (97 right now) and I enjoy blowing things up with fireballs, but I've found that any time I'm supposed to fight along a friendly npc, I end up accidentally burning them to death or they get hit by lightning, etc.

Since most of my damaging spells have aoe effect, it seems like I'm left with two options: cripple my damage output by using less spells / less aoe to avoid collateral damage, or else constantly have to go solo for the sake of my followers' lives. Is there a better way to deal with this? I'd like to be able to bring someone with me to help tank or carry items, but I'm just too destructive.

Conjuration Dead Thrall. They hit stuff for you, carry items for you and if you accidently kill them, just ressurect him

True, conjurations can be useful but they turn to ash after a few minutes no matter what. Although I dont have the zombie perks in the alteration tree, I have the atronach ones. I'd like to be able to have actual companions though :/

Maybe there is a mod available if you are playing the pc version?

Welcome to the great old question of the Elder Scrolls series, "How do I not kill people on accident?" Imo was worse in Oblivion, literally had to wait for the blades/guards to die for me to start to fight unless I wanted to get slapped with 1000 gold bounties.

Not the Thrall... the thrall is a permanent conjure...

I just ended up going solo as the companion AI is just too stupid. Although I did enjoy sometimes just hurting my companions on traps. A little sadistic but I laughed when they kept on running into them.

A few easy fixes, Get a companion that favors Range, and give him a much better ranged weapon than melee. Lots of resist gear can help as well.

    OR.

Download the UFO- Ultimate Follower Overhaul on Skyrim Nexus- you can make a companion immortal- He will go down, but can't be killed while he is kneeling.

You don't need to be a mage to kill friendlies. It's the one reason I don't bring any. I'll just kill them when I swing my sword around.

There is a mod that makes followers smarter apparently.

I don't use followers in combat areas... too much of the...

*sneaks up behind 5 quite powerful mobs sitting around a camp fire*
*suddenly my follower leaps into combat, despite being no where near them, sprinting off the edge of a hill to leap down on to the mobs*
*is also followed by my horse, which just decided it's Chuck Norris and is going to kick everyone in a 5 mile radius to death*

get a ranged companion, and take away his/hers melee weapon. this way she/he will only use the bow / xbow.

I am so sick and tired of everyone just suggesting mods to cheat the game instead of actual gameplay advice. Your suggestion to favor Ranged companions was good, but then you went and segregrated everyone that plays on console (like 72% of the game owners) by suggesting a mod. IMO Mods are for players that get bored with the game or just simply like playing god with the games. On console this is not an option. So, Please quit flooding the internet with Mod this And Mod that. Keep Mod suggestions to the Mod forums, that is what those forums are for in the first place.

My Jenassa is so smart, if she doesn't have a melee weapon, she picks up stuff from the ground and goes rambo into the bandits. I'm not shitting you, she actually picks up a melee weapon from corpses.
