Personally I'm madly interested in Japan and I found the japanese numbers rather fun.

Ichinisan = 1,2,3
Yongoroku = 4,5,6
Happyaku = 800

That seems excessive and really subjective. For example, if I named my character "John", would that be against the rules because there is a religious figure named John? And copyrighted and trademarked characters? I'd wager that about half the character names will have come from movies, novels, or other video games. Sure, some of them might be a lot more obscure than "Legolas", but does that make them any less of a technical violation? Some people might not even realize that the character name they have created has been copyrighted.

I hope they revise this naming policy to only include a ban on offensive names, references to illegal drugs or activities, and real life people. And by that I mean take out the restrictions on religious or historical figures and copyrighted or trademarked characters.

first a type something without meaning like hajdhfr, then i start spinning around characters, adding new, deleting ones untill a reasonable name comes out that matches the character

If you want to be all RP about it, I can't really relate. I'd rather just have fun with it.

I'm the opposite, I have to have a name that fits well in the lore or it just turns me off that character. I have a friend in the office who shares your opinion though and I really struggle to relate!

I mostly make mine up. Sometimes they are derivative from another source. Sometimes an *obscure* name lifted from a non-mainstream book or story.

For example: Qatol is extremely derivative of Quetzalcoatl - but then also turned out to be the name of a Naga Warrior in L5R.
