Budget build for wife, help please.

Wife is in dire need of a new computer. She has this 7 year old Compaq that, while can run WoW on the higher end of Low settings around 20 FPS(thanks to the video card we found for her), just slugs along.

We can probably use the tower she currently has, unless we can find a deal of $50 dollars being the most for one.

Set at around $550, can possibly push it to $600. Need everything inside the tower. I'd say the most intensive things she runs on it is World of Warcraft, so if at all possible something that can run it on Ultra, or at least High, at a health framerate during combat would be awesome.

    Appreciate any insight!

    I would go for:

    Intel Core i3-2100, 3.1 GHz or 2120, 3.3 GHz
    4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 RAM
    Gigabyte GA-Z68A Motherboard
    1TB 7200rpm HDD
    AMD Radeon HD 4850
    Antec 450 W Power Supply

This build should go for about $400

Marest has a sample build thread already made that may help you figure things out. Gives rough estimates on the price of certain parts to help make a machine in your budget range.

ComputerNewb's suggestion is alright. I would do the following though:

    - Change to a G860 as HT is wasted in games. The i3 2120 would be my secondary choice, but it won't really give any performance boost over the G860. The only difference is HT and a 300MHz higher clock.
    - Don't go Z68. A good H77 budget-board is all you need. Look for reliability and features. ASRock for example have good, cheap alternatives around $50.
    - Throw in a SSD. A 64GB is now somewhere around $50 and will decrease loading times by a fair chunk. If her main game is WoW, this will be a huge improvement. Can be skipped of course.
    - Not sure why you suggest such old hardware as the 4850. Get a GTX 460 or a Radeon 6870. They will do wonders in WoW and work well in current games (expect high-ultra in most titles with eye-candy turned off).
    - XFX ProSeries 450W or 550W depending on if you want to be able to upgrade later on. The 550W obviously allows for (in theory anyway) broader upgrade options. The 450W would be just fine for the suggested build though.

I believe i3 3220 was recently release just throwing it in there since 2120 is being suggested :3

This one is if you have a 64 bits OS.

The 3220 is Ivy Bridge equivalent of 3120, so essentially around ~7% faster. I still find it a somewhat waste to get a CPU with HT for a budget gaming build when there are alternatives without for a fair chunk less money. The only time HT will even be remotely useful is when you are running multi-threaded applications and even then the gain is often miniscule. It's a bit like comparing the 2500k/3570k to the 2600k/3770k.

Also, I wouldn't personally get a AMD FX CPU if my main game was World of Warcraft. Intels solutions just offer that much better performance.

    Edit:
Actually, with the Pentium G2120 on it's way the choice is pretty much made. Ivy Bridge dual core running at 3.1GHz for under $100.
