1 - Friends: 10 season of brilliance, the stuff they fluff and have to cut out is funnier than most things shows these days AIR.

2 - The Big Bang Theory: geeky jokes are cool, this is official.

3 - New Girl: I don't know why I love this show so much, but god help me I do...

honorable mentions to How I met your Mother, Red Dward, Black Adder and The Young Ones.

For what it's worth, I can't stand Friends either.

To the people that listed Fawlty Towers, I would list it too as the show is absolutely riotous, but the whole "limited to 12 episodes" makes me have a hard time rating it the best compared to ones like Seinfeld or Frasier(or Friends or Married With Children if unlike me, you find them funny rather than unwatchable) who probably have more great episodes simply due to the length of time they ran. I mean, even if they only had 30 great episodes their entire run, that's still more than twice as many as Fawlty...

Are You Being Served OTOH...that one ran long enough to compete, so it might take the 3rd spot on my list.

If animation counts, King of the Hill is my favorite sitcom, if not, Married... with Children is my favorite sitcom.

How, in the name of all that is holy, has no one (NO ONE) mentioned Curb your enthusiasm?

My faith in these boards is gone. You are all dead to me...

    My list:

    1) Seinfeld / Curb your Enthusiasm
    2) The IT crowd / The Office (UK version)
    3) Spaced / Rules of Engagement

I know I cheated, and put two per number, but I just couldnt split them... I have no idea why I love Rules of Engagement so much, it just seems to tickle me inside...

Quick edit for all the UK TV watchers here with me - They show two episodes of Seinfeld on Sky Atlantic right before Game of Thrones on Monday nights. I use this hour to laugh my ass off in preperation for the awesomeness that is GoT to follow

    K, lets see:
    1) Friends
    2) How I Met Your Mother ( - the 5th season)
    3) Scrubs

Special Award goes to Ally McBeal, which isn't really a sitcom, but it's a good dramedy with sitcom-like scenes and sometimes I even wonder why they didn't made it a sitcom instead.

Oh I also have to mention "The Nanny" which is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. Niles's name should have been Nails - because you know, he nails it all the time.

The only sitcom I've ever really enjoyed very much was That 70's Show. Most of the others I've checked out don't strike me as funny.

It's really hard to limit it to just 3 but if I have to

    M*A*S*H
    3rd Rock from the Sun
    Arrested Development

I don't consider M*A*S*H a sitcom. Partly because from the last episode of the third season (out of 11) it becomes pretty much a drama series, and partly because now I can say I don't like any sitcoms without lying.
I don't think this matters nearly as much as you think it does.

It doesn't become a drama, it has a lot of serious moments but a majority of the show is still situational comedy.

    The Big Bang Theory
South Park / Family Guy (tied)
