Warp Drive could Become Science fact - NASA small scale testing underway

Engage the Warp drive folks and share your thoughts.

    http://news.discovery.com/space/warp...ss-120917.html

    Important bits:

"He found in that case, the warp drive could be powered by a mass about the size of a spacecraft like the Voyager 1 probe NASA launched in 1977."

"The findings I presented today change it from impractical to plausible and worth further investigation," White told SPACE.com. "The additional energy reduction realized by oscillating the bubble intensity is an interesting conjecture that we will enjoy looking at in the lab."

"White and his colleagues have begun experimenting with a mini version of the warp drive in their laboratory.

They set up what they call the White-Juday Warp Field Interferometer at the Johnson Space Center, essentially creating a laser interferometer that instigates micro versions of space-time warps."

Even though this is a great step, I reckon to achieve the kind of energy levels in question we will need to either achieve controlled fusion, discover some exotic material (aka dilithium crystals from start trek) or master energy production using matter-antimatter reaction? Nothing we have will still provide the mass-energy of a voyager sized craft.

Still, I am very happy they are working on this...

Engage the warp drive mr. Crusher !

Sign me up for my own intergalactic spaceship! This sounds awsome.

We will have fun and not die, seems much more enjoyable that way =D

I'm taking bets that the first ship will leave the Universe and come back "alive".

No, "prepare for unforeseen consequences" is what The G-Man says to Eli Vance when he's handing him the material that causes the Resonance Cascade.

Yeah I've never played Half-life so I had no idea what you were talking about and was rather surprised at your responses.

The greater the action, the greater the consequences. The more benefit something does, the harm it will cause.

Ah, well the Resonance Cascade is a catastrophic event that created a rift in spacetime, sparking an interdimensional alien invasion. It's basically the premise of the Half-Life series.

So first they discover the Mass Effect with the Higgs Boson . .

    Now the Warp Drive.

What next? Two small children will be born next century, one named Shepard, the other named Kirk?

If a video game developer removed tumors from players, they'd whine about nerfing their loss in weight and access to radiation powers. -Cracked.com
