Oddly enough, my brother was fired in a similar fashion. It was him (as manager) and an employee. One of the employee's friends drove through the drive-thru, employee opened the register, handed him $300, and took off. My brother gets fired because he's somehow responsible.

In the case of the Yahoo link, it is true most places require there be 2 people in store at all times. Working as a closer at Subway, we never did (but it wasn't a policy there far as I know, they never told me jack fucking shit). However, they didn't tell the whole story. The manager was expecting another employee when she heard the bell ring. So, it seems the other employee had to go out, or the last employee had just left and she was waiting for the next one to help her close? (which is stupid, who would come in for an hour, except me in street clothes at DQ just do wash their dishes. And of course nobody would offer to help me ever, when I was stuck by myself, cleaning up after day shift's "never do fuck all" policy, and get fired because I bitched about it, but that's another story).
