Speaking of our new one-time villain, was anyone else a bit disturbed or disappointed about Celestia using his magic, and how fast Twilight was able to pick it up?

On the flip side of that, based on the fact that we don't know much about him, there's always the chance that something magical can happen and he can come back to become a major threat throughout the season, unlike the other season premiere episodes that once the two episodes are over, they're done.
Yeah, but still.. We don't actually know that he's evil. For all we know the crystal ponies coulda enslaved his people before he overthrew them and such. We only know what we've been told, which could be heavily biased

If there is no spoon.. How do you eat soup?
I don't know that it's exactly "his" magic per se. Every form of energy has two sides to it, and I think it's probably an important part of magic study to be able to understand both sides of the magical coin, as it were.

True. I guess we just have to wait and see!
(Although I still think the traumatized reaction of the crystal ponies bears out that this guy really is evil. Reminded me of real abuse victims.)
I don't think they'll delve into the subject of dark magic, it would probably lead to the question "is it right to do bad things for a good reason?", which is a tough enough question to answer and doesn't really fit the theme for a kids show in my opinion.
It's not cheating, it's winning.
