    GT 640 vs GTX 660

Hey guys, can I get some help with the graphics card?

What is the difference between the GT 640 and the GTX 660? How come the 640 doesn't have the "X" in "GTX"?

How is GT 640 for WoW? How is the GTX 660?

How much is the WoW performance difference between: 1GB GDDR5 GT 640 VS. 1.5GB GDDR5 GTX 660?

The processor I'll be using would be an intel i5-3450

Is an i5-3450 + 1GB GDDR5 GT 640 good enough to run WoW on Ultra (outside of raids) at 40+ FPS?

On a side note, does using 6GB RAM 1600MHz vs 8GB RAM 1600MHz make a big difference for WoW?

Because the GT 640 is meant to be for multimedia PC's/Very light gaming.

6GBvs8GB doesn't make a difference IIRC., WoW still runs at 32-bit unless I'm mistaken.

Choose the GTX 660 of those two cards.

And RAM, it doesn't matter, gives same gaming experience.

If you're looking at RAM kits, 6GB usually means triple channel (3x2GB). That's not ideal for i5-3450 (socket 1155) which is designed to run best in dual channel mode. Dual channel being any even number of sticks (2x2GB, 2x4GB, 4x2GB, 4x4GB etc..). That said 8GB (2x4GB kit) is better than 6GB triple channel.

Only possibility of 6GB being equal to 8GB is if you had some weird pairs of sticks like 2x2GB and 2x1GB together. That's not in any way cost effective though so you should just use that 8GB kit.

That doesn't really help, how does the GT 640 do for WoW?

What resolution are you going to be playing at? I've linked some benchmarks comparing WoW at different resolutions on the 640 running on Ultra settings. At 1680x1050, the average is ~30 FPS, which is fine. Obviously, raiding or pvp will make this drop to unplayable levels.

Remember that these numbers are for a PC running a 3770K CPU, which means your setup would give you even less FPS considering how CPU-dependent WoW is.
Conclusion: If you can afford it, go 660. If you can't, drop the settings down and get the 640GT. It really isn't a strong card, but WoW isn't very demanding either outside of PvP and raiding, where CPU is more of a factor.

By default wow does run at 32bit yes, there is however a 64bit client available to anyone that wants it.

Ended up getting an i5-2320 and a GT545 and 4GB RAM. Runs SC2,D3,WOW on max settings with no lag :/

Did a 40-man raid on Galleon and didn't drop below 40fps. Arenas stayed ato 50fps. SC2 on extreme with many units stayed 35fps+

    Didnt need excessive specs.

If SC2 gave you 35+ FPS then it'll be lower when HotS comes out due to the new physics engine.

But alright, if you can run it then I guess it's good

I'm happy with it because it came with a free 22" LG monitor, razer headset and razer mouse and I didn't have to order it online and bother myself with waiting and shipping charges. I don't play SC2 THAT much and I would even settle for playing it on good/high for HOTS

You may be happy with it now, but you should always check around before you impulse buy like that. The GTX 660 will have a much better longevity than the 545, which will end up costing you more down the road. But in the end, as long as you're happy with it now is all that really matters.
