Upgrading Processor!

Hello

I'm looking at upgrading the processor on one of my computers, but I don't know if everything will work together properly!

At the moment I'm currently running:

Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 @ 3.6ghz OC'd
Motherboard: ASUSTeK M4A87TD / USB3
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 460
RAM: 8GB DDR3

I'm looking at upgrading to an i5 or potentially an i7 processor, but from what I understand my motherboard wont be compatible with the new processor, so:

New Build:

Processor: i5 3570 ivy bridge 3.4ghz
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z77-D3H LGA
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 460
RAM: 8GB DDR3

Would this work out? Or would I have to purchase a new graphics card as well?

Looks fine, but I would go with an Asus or AsRock motherboard instead of the Gigabyte one. They are brilliant at graphics cards, but their motherboards are often rather mediocre. Something along the lines of:

AsRock Z77 Extreme4
Asus P8Z77-V LK or LX

Which RAM are you looking at?

I've already got the RAM already on my computer, I just put it in the new build to keep the same format (If that makes sense). Do different types of RAM require a compatible motherboard also?

It will be. But ram is so cheap. Might as well get a 1866 kite or higher.

Depends on the RAM. What is the brand, model and voltage (will be on the side of the RAM sticks)?

It doesn't say anywhere on the RAM sticks, it's 4x2GB dual channel RAM.

Are you not planning on overclocking (you're linking a locked chip)? If not, the Z77 board is a waste of money since its primary function is overclocking K series chips. You could save $50 by going with an H77 board if that's the case.

I definitely plan on over clocking, so instead I should get the i5 3570K?

What kind of cooling are you going to get?

Id get better GPU and let the other be. Of course if you have money to spend on a new GPU as well then get the new nvidia or amd series card.
