To me it just looks like a zombie horror/survival movie. Compared to the old Evil Dead this looks nothing like it. I mean the movie looks good and I want to go see it but it's just another one of those movies where I wish it had a different title. Also where is the chainsaw arm and the Boomstick??? Unless I missed it I didn't even see that and what is Evil Dead without the classic chainsaw arm and Boomstick? Another thing that bothers me is how the old Evil Dead had horror and humor to it, it had a perfect mix of the two and this seems to be all serious. But it's only a trailer so I'll have to see when it comes out.

Everything you just mentioned (chainsaw arm, Boomstick, and humor) is from Evil Dead 2, not Evil Dead. There was a little humor in the first, mostly due to Raimi's now signature style, but overall it was played pretty straight.

It looks like there may be at least an homage to the chainsaw arm though. In the trailer there is a scene were it looks like the girl cuts off her arm with an electric carving knife as well as a shot of a guy cutting something with a chainsaw, although it looks like it isn't attached to his arm or anything.

There is a pretty funny interview with the actor of the stoner guy from Cabin in the Woods. Apperently the director made them watch Evil Dead before they started filming, and as the actors had a general grasp of the movie they were going to make they felt, in his words: "We are so ripping of that movie!!"

I actually thought, from the trailer, that they were trying to do the same things they tried to do in the original Evil Dead, which was a really gory movie without the humor that you associate with the movies that come after

they have the chainsaw and the tree rape, so they're ok

Cabin in the Woods is a meta movie and borderline satire of the genre. There were a lot of homages paid to Evil Dead, but anyone with a decently functioning brain who has seen the movie know it wasn't a ripoff. That's like called Scream a slasher ripoff.

I'm pretty skeptical about this remake. Sam Raimi isn't directing, instead it's some nobody only known for a few short films. One of which is pretty decent.

I can see them wanting to make it an actual horror film as opposed to a cheesy horror flick with comedic bits thrown in. But it seems pretty pointless as it was already stated from someone else that Evil Dead 2 was actually a remake of Evil Dead but with more characters and MUCH more humor.

I imagine this film getting pretty average reviews upon release.

According to what I read, the tree just attacks, it doesn't rape. Raimi regretted putting that in the original movie, so I'm guessing it was his decision not to include it here, but still wanted the tree in as an homage.

Man, if you haven't seen it you should! It's 100% a tree rape, not just an attack. There is no doubt about it.

kinda looks like yet another Saw sequel... I'll probably see it, as I'm a huge fan of the originals, but if the trailer is any indication it looks like it'll be a disappointment...

He is talking about the remake is sans tree rape. There is a tree that attacks a girl, but no tree rape. At least from what I have read from a few sources online. Unless you have actually seen the remake and are saying there is tree rape in it.

I don't have a problem with there being no Ash, and half of my internet handles have Ash in them so I'm a bit of a superfan

    anyway

if there was a character named Ash they would have all the expectations that surround it, mainly, that he would survive
Ash was just one of the gang in the original, nobody would know going in that he would be the one to survive, without Ash we're back to that concept, of a group trying to keep alive and not knowing who's next. There just is no dramatic tension when you know whats going to happen and who is going to make it through, but by doing away with the character and all the expectations that surround him, there are now no expectations and anything is possible, which makes it more interesting for the audience IMHO

if fans want to piss and moan about not having Ash they can just watch the old movies, since what they want already exists

Reviving this thread because the release date is coming up:
    5 April 2013

I'm torn, the trailer looks good, but I'm not sure if it'll do the franchise justice. It was so corny that it was good!

Considering just how terribad Evil Dead 1's effects, plot and *especially* acting are, it'll probably be just fine. Most people that refer to the Evil Dead films as being awesome are never talking about Evil Dead 1, which was the only attempt at being a serious horror film. 2 and 3 were just zany, schlocky nonsense and awesome for it, though I'd never regard them as being horror films, more just comedies based on horror.

Maybe I'm odd but I actually think the first Evil Dead is the best...

Meh horses for courses I guess.

I did read an interesting article the other day about this movie. Saying it's a shame they put all this work and inventiveness into a remake when they could have done it with a fresh property and it woudln't be "tainted" by the fact that they're remaking a cult classic. Now I can agree with that but one way or another I'm excited to see it.

Also I just assumed the tree rape thing was in it from the redband trailer. But either way should be boss.

I asked my girlfriend if she heard about the remake and if she wanted to go see it. She was ecstatic and said she'd love to... Then I showed her the trailer. She doesn't handle horror movies well at all and that scene where she 'licks' the blade... that stuck with her for a few days just from the trailer.

I'm excited, and Shinzai is right, I couldn't care less about the first Evil Dead, it's Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness that were the real hits. I'm excited to see Evil Dead the way it should be, an actual horror rather than a horror failure which turned out to be a comedy.

Hopefully they do the original justice!

Oh. Reminds me of the days of VHS/blockbuster and saturday evening with a bunch of friends and movie marathon. The first Evil dead was pretty scary imo. Watching the cabin from the unknown and unseen evils eyes worked extremely well.
The sequels was more like (intentional silly) fantasy movies. Instead of a omnipotent evil, you had a omnipotent Bruce Campbell. Both Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness is actually pretty entertaining though and probally easy to find on youtube or something.
Trailer looks more like a grose slasher to me - my bet is that it wont have Sam Raimis charme and ingenuity. Personally i think im going to revisit Drag me to Hell instead.
