Affliction warlocks: your opinions on Rain of Fire

Personally when I started learning about the new specialisation system in MoP, one of my first thoughts at having Rain of Fire in Affliction was, "Wtf?" It seems so much like an afterthought thrown in to compensate the Aff-build for the lack of a proper aoe.

I'd love to see something new and exciting replace it entirely. At first I was excited by Harvest Life but aside from some PVE grinding situations, have decided that it's pretty bloody useless. Rain of Fire has its place, I'm not arguing that, I'm just thinking that as fire it's just not in the theme of the build and that I'd really like to see something different, but just as effective.

How about you? Do you like fire in your shadow or do you dislike the concept and incorporation of it into affliction as much as I do?

Same here. We have Harvest Life as mass target AoE. RoF fills no purpose and might as well be removed from Affliction.

As I understand it, Harvest Life does significantly less damage than RoF and also has a limited number of targets. And depending on the amount of targets, RoF also exceeds the damage of SoC spam. So it definitely has its place, however my main gripe and reason for this thread was that it just doesn't fit with the theme of Affliction.

I agree, afflic needs a better ae. Tab dotting soc is alright, but it kinda feels like we need something more, something shadowy and perhaps somewhat interactive. Plus I hate the animation for Harvest.

need a spell like locust swarm that jumps from target to target.

Should be an Affliction-only glyph that reduces the healing but increases the damage on Harvest Life.

    Bam, problem solved.

I freaking love the animation for Harvest. I hate tab spamming SoC because it really pisses me off when mobs die before the seed explodes, so a lot of times on trash I'll just use HL to get to see it on a ton of mobs.

I think they should go that one step further and reduce SoC damage, but make it always apply Corruption and remove Harvest Life from the talents, buff it, and give it to Affliction.

only use rain of fire for the instant dmg to trigger my soc on the targets, however i feel like affliction aoe is one of the worse in the game (unless im doing it wrong) we do need some kind of buff or something to even compete on aoe fights with more then the usually targets to multidot

In the right circumstance, I've clocked 120k dps with soc spam. But that's a perfect-storm kinda scenario. Still, I generally don't do too terrible with AoE. It's mainly a matter of knowing when to use SoC vs. RoF vs. SB>SS.

Rain of Fire I've seen go ahead of harvest life with enough targets, but if there are plenty of adds, I'd suggest a different route. Spread SoC on as many adds as you can, then SB:SoC the main target, make it explode, watch the damage fly, and continue to spread SoC on the targets, Corruption should make it tick within 2-3 seconds. (Saw a 400k damage spike during H25 Garajal)

I always though RoF staying in Affli spell book is to have spammable aoe for pvp purposes (destealthing and prevention of flag capping/smoke bomb resteath)?

I think RoF is in the spellbook for farming solo content with Mannoroth's fury. That's it.

As for Affliction being "bad" at AOE, it depends. Affliction shines in situations where multidotting is beneficial, in fact, it might be the top DPS of any class in that "AOE" situation. To compensate, it's bad at AOE on random adds that spawn in mass and die quickly.

Wind Lord in HoF is a fight where we want to use SoC spam in first phase. In fact when all targets are grouped up like on that fight Affli AoE is equal to Demo.

i only use rain of fire to pre-cast on meng's maddening shout, otherwise it doesn't have a place in affliction aoe, mana and time spent isn't as effective as SoC spam
affliction aoe needs to ramp up so if adds are dieing too fast it doesn't really shine. After the initial pop of SoC spamming i usually multi-dot everything as a SB: SoC can keep soul shards rolling and picking off low adds with drain soul as well.

Same use here. Other than that RoF drains mana way too quickly in my opinion. SB:SoC, mass SB:SSw and normal tab target SoC does the work for me in AoE situation.

Pretty much this. SoC and Harvest Life require a target to be used. Early on in the beta, Aff didn't have RoF, and there was concern that the spec had lost the ability to attack stealthed or otherwise untargetable enemies (like Lei Shi's Hide ability), and that added an unnecesary weakness to the spec. So RoF was added back on for that reason.
