Anything basic in nature. I usually drink a glass of milk.

Milk/yoghurt might help. Anything with fructose maybe?

Glass of milk next to me, it's already started to help. I just wish I could smoke during these things.

Thats just dumb anything with fructose could make it worse. A great remedy is unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Works great and is all natural.

Drink a litre and a half of water. Make yourself vomit. Then drink a glass of milk.

If this is a frequent problem, it might not be what you think it is. My brother-in-law was a longtime sufferer of the same affliction. He had an experimental device implanted about a year ago and his life has never been better. You might want to research this further. Rolaids/Tums, whatever calcium tablets you have in your area.
'Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes
    All lookouts clapped on Paradise
All souls bound just contrarywise, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

I had some really bad indigestion a few years ago that kept up for a few months, coming and going.

What I will recommend is this, do not get yourself addicted to indigestion tablets like I did, I think it made it worse because it was the only method of controlling it.

I ended up changing things in my diet, changed cereals to more whole grain stuff, used less sugar in my coffee, cut back on coffee to 1 cup a day, and stopped snacking in greasy foods. This slowly made it stop.

I just "exorcism puked" according to my roommates. It was nasty but damn I feel a little bitter. Now for all the milk. Thank you everyone btw, you've helped so much

Smoking was a big cause for both heartburn and headaches for me. As in daily. Since I quit, I can't even recall the last time I had either.

Back to the question at hand, apples did a good job of relieving even my most severe heartburn.

Crackers usually work pretty well for me (saltine crackers).

Milk or water. I keep some bottled water in the fridge, and chugging down a bottle of that usually helps me a lot. As someone else said, anything basic is good. Obviously you want to stay away from anything with alcohol or any type of acid in it (soft drinks, fruit juices, etc) as those will tend to make it worse.

Just FYI, Prilosec doesn't do anything for you right away, it takes some time to start working. For now you need an antiacid like Tums or one of the other home remedies people have suggested above
