What makes me sad is people like you feel you get "hacked" (when its most likely something retarded like you having "password" as your password or clicking those free porn flash advertisements) and care so much about your worthless account for a bad game and not something meaningful like a bank account/paypal/email address book.

Probably not, seems most of the legal system has not caught up with the technology race yet and they will see it as "why isn't blizzard already doing this as a mandatory service?"

This is just silly. Blizzard breaks even with the authenticators, and possibly loses money. I have received a free dongle from just calling up and asking for one. Not to mention you can get one for free if you have a device that can support the app.

Class action lawsuits are supposed to actually force a company to fix a problem.

    What do you think?
authenticators are about 70% profit per token. they're in lawsuits on a near constant basis though, this isn't a big deal. even if they lose it just means less people being hacked and less profit for blizz. we'll all live

tell me how it's logical that someone looks for your wow account info on a porn site. that's like fishing in your tub. it's stupid to even suggest it. people lose their account info to things like what happened here last week, an ad on a fansite with a keylogger

curse is probably to blame for hacked accounts more than anything other than the actual gold-selling sites people go to

no, they haven't always announced it. they hired a fraud specialists a couple of years ago because they had someone internally selling information from the database

there are no laws that say you have to tell your customers that your database was compromised when it comes to your wow account. blizzard has been compromised more than once. they started selling these authenticators because of it

Citation? Just shipping is a couple of bucks, and that doesnt include manufacture costs and implementation cost. Also why did you remove 26 million from somewhere in this post? Or am I just going crazy?

Citation? I have heard them discount claims of people selling information from the database for ages. I also doubt that the database would be in plain english, they are usually encrypted.

Also, they do have to tell you when the database is compromised because it includes personal information.

Your entire post sounds like complete bullcrap.

this has all been discussed to death on daeity.blogspot.com and mmochamp. he sourced everything, showed the slips from the manufacturers, etc

fanbois always end up making excuses as to why the source isn't good enough, normal people don't care enough to argue more than a few minutes, it dies down, pops up again

to this day, nearly 2 years later, no fanboi has offered up one shred of anything to counter it so we're where we've been, one side with proof, other side with emotion, no point in discussing it for the millionth time really. it's profitable, it was in response to their database being compromised internally (based on google activity about people wondering what to do when they're hacked in wow, based on the internal fraud specialist blizz hired whose job isn't to prevent it but to fix it when it hapens, based on a few other things that really leave nothing to the imagination)

also, no, no info blizz has requires them to tell you they've been hacked/compromised/whatever. you can't find any laws in any state or country that says otherwise because it simply doesn't exist

Please do bring these sources back up. 70% profit means that manufacture costs are less than a dollar a piece. Sony charged $10 for theirs and also claimed that there was very little profit. For blizzard to make 70% profit off of something that cost $6.50 seems bizarre to me.

Also, yes. Almost all info blizz has requires them to alert you of their database being compromised.

They don't look for WoW info on a porn site, they look for e-mails associated with passwords. Since most people use the same password and login name across multiple accounts, it's far easier to do it that way than to brute force hack someone or even try to phish or sneak trojans on through porn. Look at the information Guild Wars 2 put out about the types of account access violations they saw shortly after that game was released. Not to say that trojans and phishing schemes aren't used to dig up new accounts, just that many of the hacking attempts you see now days have access to vast spreadsheets of account information from previous hacking successes.

The only "deceptive and unfair" thing here is the lawsuit itself.

    His fault.
He either doesn't have an authenticator, or likes to click on every pop-up ever.

I used to get "hacked" 2 times a month, when I was like 17 and a noob.

Since I've gotten the keychain, nothing whatsoever.

Liar. I could go on and explain, but that's been done time and time again. Far simpler just to call you out on this and move on.

He has no sources. The devices are made by a third party and Blizzard is selling them for the same amount they are charged. This is easy to research as the price lists are not secret. What's more, this is a common practice. Other banks, stock brokers, paypal, etc use the same devices and charge the same amount. So either its a vast conspiracy, or they simply cost 6.50$.

Legally, this probably won't fly because adding a hardware authenticator is entirely voluntary and an 'additional' security step. No one is compelled to buy one. Someone will get a lot of legal bills for nothing. Nice to see that someone finally carried through on the long-standing threats about this. Up until now it's been a lot of put up or shut up. It should be entertaining enough to follow assuming you ever hear about it again.

If I remember right they didn't get hacked, there was an attempt which was unsuccessful.., and you can't expect them to announce every single time an attempt is taking place, it's the equivalent of the police announcing every time they get information about a possible crime..

And I'd like to see stronger passwords supported by Blizzard and all the gold buyers found and removed from the game. No gold buyers, no more gold sellers, no more problems with "hacking".

They probably had way too much malware on their PC.

This class lawsuit is stupid and won't do anything good for end-user if it will go through. If it will succeed, it might mean that Blizzard will have to provide authenticator in complect with game, which would probably lead to shut down of digital download. And that's mostly because people don't want to keep their PC clean.

Mobile authenticators are free. Physical ones, you pay mostly for delivery. People won't be hacked less, there will always be those who don't keep their PCs clean or, even worse, who will be doing things against ToS/EULA (account-sharing, using powerlevelling/goldselling services).

But I can see what he's coming from. They don't do much to stop hackers.
    its not their responsibility to.
they provide you a user name and password system. if the user gets a a keylogging program on their computer I fail to see how it is of any concern of software company. The exact same way as I would fail to see how it is the problem of the phone company if someone breaks into my house uses my phone to call someone.
