Devastating explosion out of nowhere with a massive shock-wave is most likely a natural gas explosion. Whether a ruptured mains that somebody with a cigarette walked past or a gas oven that got left on by accident, the damage sounds like it would from such an occurrence.

Still, it seems worse than the usual mode of crazy at ATS. When people start trying to blame events like this on solar activity (!) or invent these wild-ass scenarios to explain relatively mundane shit, they just look like silly little kids at summer camp trying to scare each other with ghost stories.

I would assume no on here has heard of a little website called "reddit." http://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments...en_we_hear_an/

You will find a lot more information there, and usually long before "news" sites. Although, its not always the most correct information

Screening the news.... Nothing is clear yet. No one knows so far what actually happened.
The cause of the explosion and fires wasn't immediately clear, but Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard immediately squelched initial speculation of a possible plane crash. "It was so strong that it clearly had an effect for blocks," Ballard said while grey clouds of smoke still billowed after the fires were contained.

While some questioned whether natural gas was suspected in the blast, he said he had no preliminary information on a possible cause. He said it was still a time for taking care of those forced out.

A gas explosion seems likely. I haven't heard of any confirmed deaths but considering 2 houses are COMPLETELY leveled I, not to be grim, don't think there would be much of a person left to identify.

Gas absolutely terrifies me. I hate that we use it in homes.

Either it was a gas explosion or a meth lab explosion.

ATF and Department of Homeland Security has confirmed it was not a meth lab or a bomb. The owners of the home where the blast originated were in Ohio visiting family, so they weren't home.

Looking more and more like gas main explosion.

Probably underwater on the mortgage so they blew the house up for the insurance money.

Either gas or a meth lab went off.

Supposedly they have not found any evidence of gas leaks yet. Though, personally, I would find the fact that the house is gone to be a pretty big hint... Just sayin'.

Reminds me of the big explosion they had in the Bay Area a couple years of ago.

I agree with the above poster that gas is dangerous stuff.

I love gas stoves and ovens. Far better than electric. I'm much more concerned about getting struck by lightning than dying due to natural gas related issues. Which is to say I'm not concerned at all.

I think it's a matter of perspective. I grew up with electric stove, oven, and heating so it was a bit jarring moving to California and suddenly using gas for heat.

OT: After looking at some of the pictures that does look a lot like a gas main explosion. Some of the photos are similar to the 2010 San Bruno explosion: http://www.mercurynews.com/san-bruno-fire. They're still cleaning up the legal mess from that one; turns out the power company knew they had faulty gas pipes and didn't fix them.

Edit: http://www.mercurynews.com/san-bruno-fire/ci_16035515 Better photos of the explosion. Looks really similar to the Indianapolis one.

My wife recalls a church going BOOM when she was young. They had a gas tank go up and it looked just like those houses.
