how often do you guys raid, lol?

We spend about 8 hours a week raiding, and we're having trouble keeping up in the progression race (overall, in the U.S.). Still realm first, but that's speaks more to the realm.

We are a three day a week guild raiding 4 hours a raid night. So we usually run about 12 hours of raid a week. This tier has been a little crazy with all the content so on occasion (think its happened 3 times so far this tier) we add fourth day to secure a kill. We were 2 day a week at the end of Cata and just felt to be competitive at all we needed three days

Also, is there a reason why people prefer to use actual class CC's opposed to the spears that the boss provides?

The spears are ONLY there in case your raid composition actually don't have the required CC abilities. No reason to use them if you got your own CC abilities.
