The biggest shocks of the last decade?

Just wondering what were some of the most shocking moments of the past decade? [Past 10 years give or take]
For example, Osama Bin Laden finally being caught is one for me. And Heath Ledger passing away was really hard to believe. Or how the universe is speeding up not slowing down.

America electing a black president has to be up there... very few would have predicted it 10 years ago.

This is slightly over ten years, but the ending to the sixth sense was the biggest shock of my life.
It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere.

Maybe because it happened 11 years ago?

For me, as a norwegian, 22/7 was a big shock for me. A single day cant pass without me thinking about it.

When the OP said the last Decade I assumed 2001 - 2010.

9/11, a Kurdish Socialist being elected President of Iraq, Christopher Hitchens passing away, the X-Factor/Pop Idol/whatever winners going to number 1 every fracking year, the fact that people still watch that junk after the Nth season, how close the 2008/2012 US elections were, the death of Kim Jong Il (made losing the Hitch a few days prior a little less painful), the Tsunami, Putin still being in power.

Can't think of any more right now.

A bomb in oslo which killed 8 people, and then he traveled to a labor camp further away from oslo and shot and killed 69 people, who were mostly from the age 15-20.

Colin Powell was considering running for President as a republican in 1996. Polls at the time showed him as a HEAVY favorite to defeat Bill Clinton had he ran. Word is that his wife nixed the idea. The point is, most knew that America was ready for a black president long before Obama showed up. So it wasn't shocking to see it happen.

Also, the first minority on a winning ticket was Charles Curtis, who served as Vice-President to Herbert Hoover from 1929-1932. He was a republican native american who grew up on a reservation in Kansas territory. So America has elected minorities before.

Possibly, but that doesn't make it any less funny.

For me its this supermassive housing bubble in China that is STILL GROWING. Its DWARFS the size of the US housing bubble. That thing is truly frightening. I would have thought that the US experiencing a housing crash on the global stage for all the world to see, and the resulting economic destruction is caused, would have led to China taking measure to avoid one of its own. Instead, they grew a vastly bigger one....

When that thing busts, it will crater the global economy FAR worse than 2008. 2008 will be a picnic by comparison.

How banal celebrity culture is taking over and many young, educated people I meet have no clue about events going on around the world.
