A single doesn't just contain one song, often 3 or 4, in most cases I've seen there's 2 versions of the "single", then a version of a song on the album, then an extra song or some such.
A single or two is released as teaser to the upcoming album, but once the album is released, it may be another 12-24 month until another album is released, so singles are released periodically during that period, it helps promote the album and singer. Keeps them on the airwaves longer for more coverage to acquire new fans etc.
As said above too, it allows fans access to more versions of songs than what's available on the album.
Slightly late to the party, but I was sleepingOn October 19, 2007, Within Temptation released the video for their third single "All I Need". The single was released in Europe around November 12 and features the single and album versions of the title track plus demo versions of "The Last Time" (previously unreleased track), "Frozen" and "Our Solemn Hour".[25]
