    My first world problem.

As Christmas approaches, everyone asks me what I want. I have been telling people 'I don't know' for years. I don't really need/want anything, but my lack of an answer seems to be infuriating to others. They refuse to give me money/nothing.. so.. any ideas?

I know that is not much to go on, so how about others list things that they may want?

Make them happy on Christmas morning with a new box of LEGOs.

Omg! I say the same thing to my girlfriend, that I dont need anything. Because I really dont. Well she seems to think I am a selfish prick for not wanting anything. Make any sense?

Some people need to give to feel good around this time of year, it's why they love Christmas. Indulge them, even if you don't need anything there's surely stuff you want. And if you insist on saying you don't want anything have them either A) take you shopping for practical things like new clothes for any you have wearing out, or B) get you something you'd be happy to give to charity.

Cash and don't worry, it has plenty of thought in it.

    a handy?

donate to a charity in your name?

volunteer time at a shelter in your name?

    a car?

    a house?

I mean if they are going to be pricks about it, make them pay. Tell them to come paint your house inside and out, buy you the world's finest bacon, a subscription to your favorite porn stars web site, or something absolutely ridiculous.

only you know your cravings in life, have them fulfill one of them.

ok, something that is most applicable to a gaming forum ... build a 'dream pc' and have all these people each chip in on parts, 1500 will get you a crazy rig, depends just how 'generous' these people want to be ...

    more practical?

    your favorite cologne/perfume
    jewelry/watch/accessory you really like
ipod touch or similar device of your preference
a delicacy or gift certificate for something you normally don't let yourself impulse buy
all depends on what you are really into

Honestly, I come from a family almost entirely made up of Virgos. So we all kind of see the superfluous nature of gift giving between adults. Spousal gift giving is done in private, we do a 50 dollar limit Secret Santa and save the bulk of our Christmas shopping budget to spoil the little ones.

I'm the same way really. I'm not a very wanting person. When I do want something I put in some extra OT at work, save up and buy it for myself, because it just feels better that way. Plus in my immediate family I am currently in the most financially stable situation right now (We're all upper middle class, but I don't have any children to look after). So the thought of being given a gift by people who could use the money more than myself seems somewhat absurd.

So I suppose if somebody really insisted on gifting me a gift I would have a number of options.

#1. Make them figure it out on their own.
    #2. Pretend to want something.
#3. Ask for a donation to be made in my name.

#3. I find to be the most preferable. Especially since I've only really been a part of Canada's upper middle class myself for about 3 years now. So I remember the climb up, and have come to believe of the whole Christmas holiday thing to be about the young and the less fortunate.

EDIT: #3. is also cool because depending on tax laws where you live, all or part of it can be deducted from your taxable income, and hey, a few extra bucks on your next tax return ain't too shabby.

EDIT2: Also I've thought of the idea of telling somebody as a gift to me, to buy themselves something that makes them think of me. But I'm a complete narcissist, so that might be why that idea appeals to me.

I'm sorry. I don't usually feel the need to do this but...

    Really?

As for me, I always tell my secret santa I can use new socks and a set of high quality mp3-player headphones.

My socks have a way of vanishing. This summer I bought a 30-pack of socks. I'm down to 4 pairs. I have no idea where the hell they disappear to.

Also I am constantly destroying earbuds. Either I chew on them (I have an oral fixation where I almost always find myself chewing on something) or roll over them with my chair or other random methods of accidental destruction.

Just pick something you think would be pretty cool. Ask for Assassins Creed 3.

    A new computer chair.

I don't understand why people normally skimp on these. Your chair is THE MOST IMPORTANT part of your computer.

An Aeron chair may be $500-$800, but it will be the best gift you've ever got.

If $500-$800 is too expensive ask for a giftcard to somewhere that sells them.

Ask for a nice sweater or something. People always say they don't want one, but everyone always realizes they want one as soon as they get it.

My issue with this inevitable holiday ordeal:

What I really want is cash!!

    Why?

Because I either want something outside of the normal Xmas gift price range (hello $800 Suppressed Ruger Mark III) or I want something incredibly particular that I don't trust another person to buy the right one (new Mobo/CPU combo.) That or I want something rather obscure and/or hard to find where if I were to put it on a list for someone I'd have to give them the URL to the site to buy it from.

People just need to realize when we say we'd rather have cash, there's a reason for it.

Just tell them that you don't want anything.

I really don't get why people still feel the need to give each other shit around Christmas.

One of the reasons why I that actually dislike Christmas. The forced generosity that so many people exude. Seriously, if you actually want to give someone something, just give it to them, you shouldn't need a special holiday to do something nice, and if that holiday is the only reason you're giving someone a gift then you shouldn't do it in the first place.

Every year I ask for a bunch of wrapped empty boxes. I love opening presents, don't really have room for "stuff." It would be nice it someone would give me what I want instead of what makes them feel less guilty.

Indeed. I refuse to partake now. When people ask why, I tell them I'm not Christian. When they say they aren't either, I ask them if they celebrate Eid... Naturally they say no, because they aren't muslim. People still don't see that.

    Some ideas:
TV show you like, list some movies, a game you might want?, Do you shop anywhere regularly? You could ask for a gift card to that place. Do you drink? Alcohol. Do you play sports? Sporting apparel. Need a new computer component? That. Basically anything that is purchasable and not more than you'd expect to get in a gift really, unless you don't like owning things xD

Short of that, you could just ask for money. It's what I do most of the time, I haven't the last year or two but prior to that when my family would ask what I want I'd say "Don't know, maybe just money" but lately I've known. This year I want a bike. I was going to just buy my self one but since Christmas is coming up it's better to say that, then that way they at least get to buy me something since my mum doesn't like giving me money.

His location doesn't show! What if he's Australian like me. Then he'd just look ridiculous.

Ask them to make a charitable donation in your name, and suggest some charities that you support.
