    Tiger Wood (Jade Forest)

Having a discussion with a friend of mine. There's a location in Jade Forest called "Tiger Wood". We both agree that it's a reference to Tiger Woods, the famous golf guy.

However, he's arguing that Tiger Woods should somehow have paid Blizzard 40K+ euros for them to name the location after him, as an advertisement.

I'm arguing that it's merely a small reference and that no one would ever pay that much to have their name (just their name, nothing else) featured like that. Especially because it's only one persons name, and not an entire brand or anything.

He's also saying that Blizzard should have contacted Tiger Woods specifically for this and signed a contract.
All this sounds extremely unlikely, and while I know I'm right, I wanted to show him the responses to this thread to convince him as well.

    So - who is right?

(My apologies if this is better suited for Fun Stuff - was in doubt, as it fits both places)

Of course it's just a reference. They do that all the time.

Mia the Rose is a reference to a pornographic actress. I doubt she paid them 40k+ in order to put a reference to her in the game...

There are hundreds of references like that in WoW.

Edit: Besides, only people who know who Tiger Woods is will get the reference. Those who don't won't. So it's not really advertising because they will simply think it's just a common location name.

Other way around though, but yes (he's saying that Tiger Woods paid Blizzard to feature that "advertisment" of him).

I highly doubt that it's any close to a refrence to Tiger Woods. But that's my cents.

Why you ask? Well, the asian culture has a TON of Tiger relevant things, be it 'someone', a place, a title, statues, god, martial art etc etc.

What possible reason would he have to pay a video game to make a vague reference to him? It makes no sense at all.

It's just a reference, there are a ton of them in the game. Notice it's not exactly "Tiger Woods" but "Tiger Wood." If they had used Tiger Woods then they might get in trouble for using his name without permission. Also, why would he pay to have an obscure as all reference to him? That would be a waste of money.

It's much too vague and likely not even a direct reference. It's just a woods with some Tigers in it...

Even if it were a direct reference I'm not sure you'd even need to pay or be paid for mentioning someone's name.

Or its a wood with tigers in it - hence the name Tiger wood. This is why its so idiotic they have so many references. People read too much into these things.

IF they were referencing Tiger Woods it would be some black human character with a similar sounding name, so it specificly wasn´t anything they had to pay for.

The word you want to use is "have" not "of".
You may have alot of stuff in your country, but we got Lolland.

It's a very obvious reference, and if anything, they probably had to get permission to name it that.

So people can't name anything with the word "Tiger" and "Wood" in it? Has Tiger WoodSSSSSSSSSS patented those 2 words?

Miarose is a WoW player that happened to star in one WoWish themed porn.

Tiger's Wood is not Tiger Woods.
Tiger Woods is not a licensed and trademarked brand, just some guys name.
Arguably there are other Tiger Woods out there, either named independently, or in tribute of the golfer; royalties are not paid to him from these other "Tiger Woods".

Where's the third option, "Random coincidence"?

Why on earth would Tiger Woods want to advertise in wow by naming a place after himself? What could he possibly get out of that?

I believe that it IS an intentional reference to Tiger Woods, but I highly doubt he himself had anything to do with it.

More likely, it went down like this:
Dev 1: "Alright, we need something to name this little patch of land"
Dev 2: "Which patch of land?"
Dev 1: "The one with the tigers, in the wooded area"
Dev 2: "Oh... well... let's name it... Tiger's wood!"
Dev 1: "Heh, that's kinda funny. Sure."

Its called an Easter Egg. Its the same with the house on the island in Jade Forest with the balloons attached to it. Pixar/Disney didnt pay Blizzard to put it in there, the developers just thought it would be a cool thing to have in there.

It has absolutely nothing to do with money and 100% having to do with having a little bit of fun while designing a game.

Should Lady Gaga contact Blizzard because Lady Lala is in the game? As Reaohh above me said, it's called an Easter Egg and there have been many in the game since day 1.
