    Amd fx4100

So I'm looking for a second machine and there is a good price on an AMD FX4100 and I'm wondering if the processor is any good or if it'll get dated quickly.

Here is the actual machine (note price is Canadian)

The only issue with this machine is the power supply is only 300W but I can replace it fairly easily. So I just need to know about the FX4100.

Would it be worth the extra money to go to this?

PS - Thanks for moving this

Second one will be faster in most games mainly because of the better graphics card, but on WoW in can be actually slower because of slower processor. Both computer are today lower midrange when it comes to modern 3D games and will be badly outdated in 2-3 years.

You'll have to do some big compromises either way you go in that price range. When you upgrade to about $800-900 you can buy a gaming computer without having to gimp on anything.

I know, I'm not thrilled about the price range either but it's not my money I'm spending (this one is for my wife and I want to get her something good but she doesn't want to spend the money).

    dryankem,

The FX 4100 is a good processor, I used it before I built my last system. Extremely easy to OC it to 4.2GHz, I cannot comment on the video card in the computer link... I've only used Nvidia here but it can play games nicely excluding 25man raids in wow.

I've never seen my FX4100 or GTX 560 Ti drop below 40 FPS in wow, GW2, and a couple other games.

A 7750 has really poor performance compared to the 7770. http://be.hardware.info/reviews/2552...ntage-i7-3960x

Yeah the AMD 7750 is really low end, 7770 is acceptable.

Try to get an FX-4300 or FX-6300. The 4100/6100 are Zambezi chips, which are somewhat known for underperforming relative to other options in that price bracket. I just built a new system built around the FX-4300 today and it's working just fine.

For the record, the 4300 and 6300 are the "Vishera," series of chips. Now, I'm sure a Zambezi chip will work fine, but I'd try for a Vishera chip if you can get one for about the same price (the chips themselves are around $120-$140 depending on where you get them.)

Otherwise, you might consider one of Intel's dual core processors, like the Ivy Bridge i3 series; they should be around the same price as the Zambezi chips, but will perform much better despite having fewer cores (due to the issues with Zambezi's architecture, if I remember right.)

EDIT: And yeah, try to snag a 7770 if you can. I was able to get an MSI 7770 GHz edition for something like $65 during Black Friday sales, once my mail in rebate comes through. I've read that the card is overpriced for its performance, but those were reviews written when it was released back in October. I think its price dropped since then, so it should be competitive now.

This cpu has poor single thread performance :/ Loads of games are limited to 2 cores only, that's the moment an i3 is much better than the fx.

Basically you rather aim for an i3 and in the future you can sell this chip for lets say 80eur and just add an additional 120eur and you have an i5 and you don't have to upgrade your motherboard at all.
