What is your Idea of an Epic Boss Fight?

I'm sure there are some boss fights that we never forgot because of their mechanics and creativity. I would love to see some sort of boss fight where the mechanics of the raid are to fight off your own group in some way until a couple are left to fight off the boss. I know it sounds vague but I guess I'm more of doing something different besides "Hey, there's the big bady guy lets kill him" approach.

A boss fight where I actually need to dodge stuff. Like grabbing a hook and waiting for some mechanic expire. Where bad DPS can be compensated with reflexes and true combat skills.

    Story, build up, mechanics, purpose.

Put these all together, and you get a really engaging encounter. Sadly, there haven't been enough of them recently

I'm a sucker for narrative fights that bring an element of nostalgia. Or giving players the sense that they're actually making a difference by phasing something permanently. That or innovative game-mechanics.

Sorry for being abstract, but literally anything can fit that.

I agree, reminds me of the last boss encounter with Blade Lord Ta'yak. Dodging the tornadoes was different.

Boss fights don't need to be epic. They need to be good. Mimiron HM still stands as my favorite boss fight ever. That fight was not epic. But it had great mechanics and was perfectly tuned to be very challenging but not frustratingly so. It required a high degree of personal responsibility from each member of the raid and if you fucked up, everyone knew. But at the same time, the fight wasn't a wipe simply because one person did something dumb. It was also varried. So many fights are "Repeat steps A, B and C six times and you win". Mimron was four fights in one.

And lastly, it was memorable. Who that played it could ever forget, "We haven't much time, friends!"

I mean, there was a big red button that said "Do not push" and his final mode did spell out Voltron. I guess that's pretty epic.

Yogg was amazing because of the mechanics. You had to work as a team, as always, but there were so many different things to do. There was straight up combat, which is always important, but there was unique mechanics in the awesome way, not the annoying was like vehicles or something.

I'm also really into Old Gods, so it had that going for it.

Agreed for the most part. If they try to make every fight epic, it would SUCK. There needs to be some epic ones, though, like final bosses. If they're NOT epic, it sucks.

I think Lich King was probably the most epic encounter I've even done. I appreciate multiple phases and mechanics that force the entire raid to pay attention (Defile) or have heavy coordination (valk phase). Plus it was Arthas...a character they'd been building up for years, instead of like "oh look, it's ummm...Deathwing! Remember him from Day of the Dragon? Whaddaya mean you don't read the novels?"

If you haven't read the novels and didn't know who Deathwing was, I don't know where you've been. The Aspects have always been an important part of the game.

When her voice changes, I've always wanted to use that as a sample in a song.

I actually have read the novels...how did you think I even knew Deathwing was in Day of the Dragon?

Alls I'm saying is that there's probably plenty of people who didn't know who Deathwing was before he appeared in Cataclysm. Not everyone is well versed in WoW Lore. Plus you can't say that Deathwing has had as much facetime as Arthas. Not by a long shot.

The first time I heard the voice in Frostmourne, even though it was always slightly panicky when raiding.

You have come to bring Arthas to justice? To see the Lich King destroyed?
First, you must escape Frostmourne's hold, or be damned as I am; trapped within this cursed blade for all eternity.

General "you." I'm saying if people who ONLY play the game didn't know who Deathwing was, they weren't paying attention. Arthas didn't have a big in-game presence (because he was frozen and all that) until his expansion. In my opinion, he was a little TOO involved in everything we did. How many times did he come hang out while we were questing, and for some reason, not kill us? That was silly.

You don't have to be well versed in the lore, but if you read quest text, you'll learn who characters are. I know that's asking a lot of some, though.

    Anyway, this is off topic.

I never actually did any of the Deathwing fights, because I quit, but I hope they were epic. Lol?

Seriously frightening. There's not a lot in WoW that really gets that reaction.

The Algalon story was pretty epic, but I felt the fight mechanics left something to be desired. I didn't do it until the next expansion, so I didn't get the real experience, but even still, there wasn't a ton to it.

Story and/or mechanics. I just hate characters artificially made important and fights hard just because they have stupid/clumsy/obscure mechanics.
<3 Algalon, LK, Raggy from FL, Mimiron, Yogg, Nefarian, Kara, MH and even Siniestra.
