Texas cuts Planned Parenthood. Costs tax payers an estimated 200 million.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/07/us...ce=twitter&ad&

When state lawmakers passed a two-year budget in 2011 that moved $73 million from family planning services to other programs, the goal was largely political: halt the flow of taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood clinics.

Expanded coverage of Texas is produced by The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit news organization. To join the conversation about this article, go to texastribune.org.

The latest Health and Human Services Commission projections being circulated among Texas lawmakers indicate that during the 2014-15 biennium, poor women will deliver an estimated 23,760 more babies than they would have, as a result of their reduced access to state-subsidized birth control. The additional cost to taxpayers is expected to be as much as $273 million — $103 million to $108 million to the state’s general revenue budget alone — and the bulk of it is the cost of caring for those infants under Medicaid.
Well done Texas, you've figured out that not every cost is avoidable!

States shifting expenses to burden the federal government? Color me shocked.

It sounds like they didn't do it for 'cost cutting reasons'... but perhaps for moral reasons.

I thought it was immoral to waste tax payer spending too.

Yes, the moral reason of stopping tax money for abortions.

Except none of the taxpayer money went to abortion in the first place, but shhh.

it costs more $ to give birth and raise a kid then it does to have an abortion.planned parenthood is generally a good program and it also provides jobs for educated people.well now there will be even less jobs to go around and more $ spent on child birth/food and all that.civil service workers and state/ government programs are not what bankrupted america and its states.its the wasteful sending and the 50+ billion a year we give away to other countries, and out sourcing of jobs that is the problem.

there is socialism for the rich in america "just look at the last government bail out" those who have the $ want to keep it,so them make sure there always rich.thats why the top 10% richest americans have gotten richer even in this shitty ecenony now.but man they dont want the middle class to have nothing, not even a 20 year pension.its funny they are cutting pensions for teachers, cops, jail guards ect. but they never once cut the pensions for the elite rich, just look at all the senators and congressmen ect.wake up america!

Suppose this begs the question: which is more important, abiding by your morals and not funding an organization that facilitates abortion, or abiding by your morals and not wasting your citizens' money? Given that the former is built on a shaky foundation at best, I'm going to go with the latter.

If something is legal I don't really think a legislator's personal feelings on it should be taking part in how they legislate on it. They're there to craft laws and run the country, not to implement their personal moral code.

I think that they shouldn't have done it, but at the same time, I do believe kids need not to be fucking each other the moment they hit 13, sounds like more education for both sides is in order here.

I've come to dislike false equalivencies more than I dislike someone just being openly wrong.

They're something of a pet peeve of mine. Favorite attack for those who want to feel superior to everyone.

Southern conservatives also tend to oppose sex education.

Right. It's funny, I was having a discussion about morals earlier today and I came to the conclusion that we should be operating on two sets of morals: the personal and the societal. When interacting with society you should generally follow society's moral code. That includes, but is not limited to, the law. It also includes social norms, rights, and general behavior guidelines. Aside from the law, these morals aren't that strict, so your personal moral code is given some leeway.

Anyways, in cases like this a person's personal moral code is completely irrelevant. What is relevant is the moral code of society. Because of this it becomes important to determine where exactly society stands on abortion, and ultimately whether or not this decision jives with that code. I would argue that it doesn't, considering the legality of abortion, the lack of an effective for cutting funds for Planned Parenthood, and the damage this does to those who used it. From a purely utilitarian perspective this is an immoral move - they're causing more harm in their pursuit of their own morals, betraying not only the people that they serve, but the morals of the society that they were elected by.

In short, they dun fucked up.
