How much dps should I be breaking?

    Hello, my char is

    http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/characte.../Qoning/simple

Shadow is my off-spec as you can guess by the trinkets. My question is simple, how much dps SHOULD I be realistically looking at ~dummy?.

As it is right now I'm doing as much as my Elemental shaman, who is 20 ilvl lower. Which is about 53k over some 8 minutes on dummy. And I can't see what I'm doing wrong.

I'm by no means a bad player, but I wonder if there is simply something I'm missing.

Don't break DPS. Be nice to them.

Download simulationcraft. It has a setting for target dummy. Check the buffs/debuffs that are appropriate. Click Simulate.

You need to break that dps into pieces... then you are doing it right.

I think I am about the same ilvl as you and 53k seems way low. Its hard to know what or if you are doing something wrong without logs or a video or something. I'm sure most of this is stuff you already know, but check this out quick to make sure you're not missing anything on rotations: http://youtu.be/7BtUcZUb3rc?t=5m58s

I think the most common reason for underperforming is when a player isn't hitting MB immediately when it cools down. Maybe try setting up weak auras to have a huge MB icon bounce on your screen every time it cools down.

You are 0.12% under hit cap, not much but could stand to be fixed.

In execute phase don't be too quick to spam SWD twice in a row if the first one is going to give you 3 orbs. Hit DP at 3 orbs so the generation of the next orb isn't wasted.

I'm not sure if PI is sim'd as the best talent choice.

Try using an addon called "HaloPro" to notify you that you're at the correct range to get max damage from halo.

Make sure you're using shadow fiend.

Target dummies are a pretty warped way to judge your DPS. Queue for the LFR as a DPS and run some logs, then we can analyze it and see what's going on.

I thought the double tap only gave a single orb? Did that change at some point and I missed it?

double tap gives one orb. most of your dps gains/loss is from not having good dps proc trinkets. you can hold your DP for 5-6 seconds once you have your 3rd orb w/o losing dps (before mblast comes off cooldown), and sometimes you can get an extra 3-5k intellect from procs during this time. same goes for shadowfiend.

also, you can get away with using haste to boots as long as you're careful with glyph of mindflay + body and soul. you'd be able to replace some of your 320 haste gems with reckless (haste/int).

big issue: you're using power infusion. PI is horrible for shadow. DI is going to give you more benefit on a target dummy, but most of the fights where shadow is strong are fights where twist of fate is the stronger talent. if you run DI + FDCL, you have to cancel your mind melt aura whenever DI procs or you will potentially waste DI procs (bug, but i have no idea when/if they will fix it, but it's why sometimes you will get DI procs and your mindblast will light up but will still be on cooldown). it's easier to just run mindbender (for pure single target or mindsear fights) or not glyph mindspike (for council fights like stoneguards) to get around the issue when using DI.

I've never received 2 orbs from double SWD. I wish it worked that way... in my experiences the 2nd SWD doesn't proc another orb, only the first. Doesn't matter if that 2nd/no cd SWD is used on another target either. Its only the first SWD off cooldown that gives an orb.

you used to get orbs from both SWDs but they removed that in beta with the rest of the spriest nerfs (like mindflay reducing pet cooldown, and DI being 5% instead of 15% chance) because they claimed our execute damage was too high. even if we got it back, i'm not convinced our execute damage would be higher than a warlock's.

Technically if you wait 6 seconds inbetween the first and second SW you get another orb, there's some information on it in this HTP thread. It is a useful thing in some situations.

Easiest way to track the 6 seconds are to either use the addon listed. (it's a pretty simple addon, quickly made)

    or use /sw macros

    like:

    #showtooltip Shadow Word: Death
    /sw 6
    /sw play
    /use Shadow Word: Death
