thinking about going to austrailia sometime in 2013

hey i was just looking for some advice from some aussies about visiting your country. firstly, does your super 15 rugby season coincide with your afl season? im a huge rugby fan and would love to watch quality rugby live and ive only seen afl a couple times on tv but i think it would be pretty great to watch live.

secondly, should i go to sydney or melbourne? id prefer to go to a city where both "home teams" for the rugby and afl i plan to see have a good chance of winning.

thirdly, i get that you guys seasons are opposite to ours. you have summer when we have winter. i also really love hardstyle and would love to hit an amazing outdoor hardstyle event while in austrailia and would prefer it to be as warm as possible.

so i guess in a nutshell, when would be the best time to go to austrailia and do all the things i mentioned above and have it be as warm as possible? and sydney or melbourne?

Sydney, best time would be to go during Spring or Autumn. Summer is blisteringly hot, and in winter it has a tendency to rain a lot.

Not sure where abouts you are from, but I visited this summer and I found Sydney extremely expensive - Melbourne was considerably cheaper for me. But that might just be me being a pommy =D

Of course it's more expensive, because it's the wealthier, more cosmopolitan, and prettier of the two. It's like comparing Constantinople in its height to London during Tudor times.

If you want to go to a hardstyle event then the upcoming Iqon festival or defqon 1 festival is the place to be, they take place in april and september respectively, if its heat you're after then around september is the peak, spring and plus defqon 1. Summer here is blistering hot most of the time.

Edit: Sydney for the win, we have the best hardstyle scene :P

Melbourne is the better city all around but for your preferences Sydney would be the better choice. There's a great underground rave scene for hardstyle in Sydney and most major rugby and AFL games end up being played there although I can't predict how the season goes.

As for weather the best time imo is to visit around november, during the summer the weather is very random but in the lead up before summer you have a better chance to see sunny days without the humidity and storms.

I live in Sydney and have lived in Melbourne. I find Melbourne to be a better city to my tastes, not that there's anything wrong with Sydney it's also a great place to visit.

i saw about iqon on qdances australia page. april might be too soon for me, i only have 140$ canadian to my name right this moment lol. which according to a google search is 98 aussie dollars. if i keep activities to a minimum here and just play mmos and work i could do it but i enjoy having a social life.

how much money would sydney set me back per week? thinking of going 2 weeks and ive heard sydney is an expensive place. and how is the bar/club scene midweek there? if i could party hard for a couple weeks straight thatd be sick. sometimes on weeknights here the main drag down granville street can be kinda quiet.

do people smoke a lot of pot in australia? i do myself but i know better than to try and bring shit like that on a plane. so if i go looking for it will it be a bitch to find?

and i did a bunch of digging on interwebs, it seems rugby league, union and afl regular seasons all finish in august. i saw that the sydney swans won the afl title this year and i remember reading in the paper here about it and that there was a canadian player on that team. are they looking good to make the playoffs again? with so many rugby league teams in sydney im sure one of them will, and how about for rugby union? ive watched super 15 before on tv and would absolutly love to see some live, especially playoffs!

and as for best hardstyle scene i think that would have to be holland but i think australia would be a better place to go on vacation!

    ---------- Post added 2012-12-25 at 06:02 AM ----------

now if only your pro sports teams didnt have adds on the jerseys, they would make good souvenirs!

The cost depends on where you're planning to stay, if right in the city and surrounding "rich areas" it could easily set you back hundreds per night, suburbs in the inner west would be much cheaper while not too far from the city. The club scene is awesome, we've got any club/genre your heart desires. Since you're into hardstyle and such I can honestly recommend Masif Saturdays @ Shark hotel, frequented by international djs and THE place to be for all things hard dance.

You will find alot of people do smoke pot and it's quite easy to find, though I dont smoke myself I have friends that do regularly. I dont actively follow AFL/NRL so perhaps someone else could answer that for you. You're right, holland is the place for hardstyle but we've got a booming scene here as well that is expanding rapidly.

I second Sydney. I have worked and lived in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, with my hometown being Central Queensland. I would say for a purely "Australiana" experience Sydney offers the best compromise between being typically Aussie in nature and also having lots to do and see as a tourist. As a life long queenslander Melbourne has a very jarring lifestyle and culture to me. I also recommend you hop a cheap Virgin flight up to check out Brisbane, Mackay or Cairns.

    Hope you have fun

    I'd recommend Sydney 100%.

Depends when you are coming over will depend on your sports availability.

Super15 Rugby starts in early to mid-february and runs till about start of August with games on Fri/Sat the NSW-Waratahs will have several home-games among that period at either two of our stadiums being ANZ Stadium (Homebush) or Allianz Stadium (Moore Park). Both are decent grounds and they face some decent opponents that will surely be good clashes. It's not the biggest following over here though. From what I've seen in Sydney NRL/AFL is vastly more popular.

AFL starts late March and runs till about September/October (Up to the Premiership). The team to watch here is Sydney Swans and (lol) Western Sydney Giants games are played at same venues as Super15 and are thrillers to watch. Sydney Swans are the current premiers so they will be a great team to watch next year.

NRL is another great sport down here in Australia and with NSW being the "Home of the teams" having majority of the NRL teams I strongly suggest checking out a game. They are played at tons of venues and their schedule runs basically the same as AFL being March/October play every weekend. State of Origin is as big as it gets and some of the best football you can watch.

Yes we have the opposite seasons.
    December-February is our Summer
    March-May is our Autumn
    June-August is out Winter
    September-November is our Spring.

Autumn in Australia is still fairly warm during the day with the nice cool nights just increased rain fall, same as our springs (With the odd-hot day mixed in). Winter over here can get cold but nothing major compared to the rest of the world. Summer, we have very hot and humid days with temps hitting 40degrees celcius as 100% humidity so unless you can handle the heat it can be quite draining. Personally, I'd travel in Spring/Summer but it means you might miss out on the Super15 as it will be fairly late in the season.

We do have some of the best beaches though (And no it's not the famous Bondi beach), with beautiful waves, sand, sights, rockpools and girls (:P). But these are the ones that do not get as busy such as a few hours drive down south in Jervis Bay or up North to Terrigal and other surrounding areas.

Sydney does have a few very good clubbing spots as well as the casino which has a club called Marquee (Rumor has it, it's one of the best out) as for the hardstyle. I'm not an expert so can't comment but there is some decent outdoor/underground scenes going around. They are not hard to find and Sydney has an abundance of them.

I do recommend trying to fit into your budget or plan visiting Melbourne and/or Brisbane as they are quite beautiful places. Melbourne has the beautiful "alleyway paradise" full of beautiful shops and some of the best cafes and Brisbane can be quite a beautiful sight to. But even seeing parts of NSW like the Southern Coastline, Hunter Valley can all be beautiful places to.

A Australian Work Visa is nothing hard to get really, a tip we use credit/debit cards here ALLOT it's not a rare-sight so don't be afraid to use yours. Some places do have min. transactions so bring some cash (It's good to always have SOME native cash on you) but using your card will not be culturally wrong.

    FYI a few things:
    - No we don't have Kangaroos in our backyard, but don't f*ck with a mother with a Joey if you see one. It will kick you like no tomorrow and no doubt do serious damage.
    - We have some of the deadliest spiders and snakes in the world so in the wet/warm seasons be prepared to see them.
    - Sydney has a great range of accommodation from hostel stays to some beautiful resorts. Look at your budget and work around it.
    - If you are into give a fishing charter a shot, NSW and Australia alone has some great fishing going for game/sports based fish and it can be quite fun. I've done it and it's killer fun.
    - Newtown is a suburb in NSW. It's very much a "hipster" style suburb with milk-bars (Galaga Remix), clubs to suit and other things alike. It's a 1/2 decent place.
    - Going to sound odd, but if you are looking to bust a nut. Brothels here are legal but are expensive. There is a few good ones around though.

Anything else, please feel free to PM me or reply here. Happy to help!

^ Everything he said except the snake/spider thing. Sure, we have them here, they're around and you SHOULD be prepared but realistically you likely wont see any. I've lived here for 11 years and I've only seen a redback spider a few times. That said you should be prepared just in case and it will mostly depend on which area you'd be staying at.
