Some charities help, but if you read "Dead aid" by Dambisa Moyo (hope I spelled that right), you realize that sometimes we hurt the people we set out to help..

Personally I think they're typically being run very poorly, and a lot more work could be done to improve them, but they are run and operated typically by un-paid volunteers who have also got jobs & families.
What I don't tolerate or like is the religious association of nonsense (No offense) I have to put up with to support charities. I give a lot of my money to various charities through donations, but even when they come to the door I tend to give what I can, what I don't like though is how they feel the need to press their views and thoughts about the situation on me.
I've been told before by various members of different charities, that I need to hear "the worlds of our lord, before you can donate Sir". So, I just slammed the door shut on their face. They need to be run more efficiently, and with less religious association to those not interested.
Y'know what'd be better than charity? If businesses could afford to hire the people who need help! /mittromneyhat
Charity's nice but seems too centralized/inefficient.
What the hell is with these *Odd Thread* titles?
Freedom is individual citizens deciding if they want to be me me me or if they want to give to charity to help the poor. Being told you WILL pay taxes that WILL be given to someone else that you dont get to decide for yourself if they deserve help or not that some old people in the government think deserve it more than you is NOT freedom. I will vote for Freedom every time!

If you dont like it, you dont have to accept their help.
Also just handing people money is a waste of money. Perhaps the charities should be using donations to teach people how to earn their own money. Like the old adage goes. You give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach him how to fish and he will never be hungry

It's the state's responsibility to help the truly poor in my opinion. Charity should be for other special causes, not a whole class of people.
"In order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must be intolerant of intolerance." Paradox of tolerance
Which is just empty rhetoric. Taxes are a necessary part of society, and as a part of society, you have to contribute to it. Part of those taxes will be used to help the less fortunate in society, because with poverty comes a whole mess of problems. A lot people learned this a century or so ago, mainstream America has sat in a bubble for the most part. You'll learn eventually.I will vote for Freedom every time!

It depends on the charity... thats like saying are all politicians useless, or are all companies evil, or are all wow players douchebags :P
So everyone who doesn't has a job is scum? This is so wrong I don't even know where to start...
So people with cancer are scum? people who can't get work due to circumstances? People who got screwed by insurance companies/banks? People who lost their job due to the crisis? There are a loads of examples
And you believe this puts a country in debt? I think you don't have a clue about the real world.
I think you don't even have a job our pay taxes, because of the childish way you respond.
-Edit-
I do however think there are charities that do it wrong. But this is more often then not the donaters fault, inform yourselves about the charity you are about to donate to. Because a lot of people have a bad consience and just donate to donate.
There are a lot of very good charities out there, you should donate to those, not to people who come begging at your door (not to say there are no good door-to-door charities, but by donating blind you encourage false charities and corruption.

Of course it is, consider what the lives of millions of people were like before the advent of social welfare programs (pre-WWII). Another way of looking at it is to see what exactly makes us a first world country (welfare programs).

They are corrupted because their governments and cultures have been manipulated by larger first world countries, hell even larger religions (Sudan, Somalia).
Hey wnyirishguy, are you using a translator to speak in English? Just curious because sometimes its abit hard to read your threads without getting a headache.
