The amount of kiddies here with the "omg it doesn't work, the skies falling" with "sky falling" being anything from end of wow, end of Blizzard, end of world, end of their lives etc is rather scarey.
Issues like this aren't an everyday occurrence, expecting fingers to be snapped, wands to be waved and the issue to be magically fixed are rather... naive to say the least. With as much planning as you'd care to throw at this (down to a redundant part for pretty much everything) you can expect this to be pretty damn major. The mindless wailing and gnashing of teeth is frankly ridiculous, get a grip kiddies.
Blizzard have their servers hosted by companies that are paid to not have downtime, that they are down isn't exactly Blizzards fault and isn't something you can just throw money/people at to make right. If you think that's brown-nosing then you have my pity and I wish you the very, very best in your adult lives. They aren't likely to be pleasant once mummy and daddy aren't wiping your nose/bottom for you.
If you were to take a few minutes to rationally consider what it takes to house the service wow provides and the technology required to run it (e.g up to 80 computers up to 9000 km apart being updated within 10 to 300 ms with the updates to your character and everyone else's character as it takes damage from the other players in BG while at the same time tracking the damage you've done, the kills made, xp earned etc etc and the abuse the database running the show is taking and the bandwidth requirements to keep that data flowing real time) you might actually realise that things aren't just magically kept running for your tiny, self important personality. It takes a reasonable degree of skills from the folks looking after it. They'll (Telia and/or Blizzard) literally have all hands on deck trying to fix this. Cut em a TINY fraction of slack for fucks sake. I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate being ripped a new one over any mistakes you might make. It would likely destroy your precocious, highly strung, little ego.
Edit: and apologies for the rant. The shallow mentality of some folks in here just completely blows me away.

Perhaps time to stop wasting time here and clear dust from the future so you get to play more in the future?
Fuck this shit, going to play gw2 now
This really cracked me up. Server maintenance needs true skill. You need at least a PHD from Harvard and an IQ average of 190 to patch and restart servers. It takes a reasonable degree of skills from the folks looking after it.
Is this a joke or what, how many monkeys does it take to fix the internetz???
i can login, cant get past loading screen though, sticking on 75%
Getting "Character not found" after sitting at 90% of the loading screen rather than the usual DC now. Something is changing, hopefully won't be too long until we get in? :3
edit: Got the log-in noise on the loading screen, still stuck at 90% or so!
edit: the "character not found" is only happening for my DK in Shrine of Seven Stars, I get a DC on other chars in Stormwind.

What if this is Blizzard's way into forcing us to enjoy the holidays?
*Conspiracy Keanu*
Login servers are working flawlessly, that's not the issue.
The issue as of right now seems to be on Telia's end (HINT: Their network partners). In case you didn't know, Telia is an ISP.
Teliasonera (Telia) is a network operator that provides mobile and internet services. They are an ISP and are directly linked to Blizzard to provide network support for the europe servers. There was even an NPC named after them http://www.wowhead.com/npc=16702/telia.
No-one is saying that Europes' net is falling apart, but the issue is based in Europe using Europe ISP's and thus Europe networks. This problem is up to the network guys in Europe to fix (If it is infact a problem on Telias end, then it is up to them).
This is gonna persist all night long, deal with it.
Dinged 90 last night, had 6 hours this morning free to gear up....damn it. shit happens though. Id reinstall GW2 but then I realised I hate that game.
If some people are actually in the game world atm, how are they doing it?
I've tried a few VPNs and still can't get into the game world.
