As for HyperThreading, this feature tends to only be available on the Intel Core i7 series, and not the i5. For instance, over the years, the i5-750, i5-2500k and now the i5-3570k, all never HT. This is as opposed to the i7-860, i7-920-990, i7-2600k and now the i7-3770k, which all supported it.
Note that HT makes almost no diff in the majority of games, and I've even heard of stories of it causing more bad than good - I had a friend who reported some stuttering and high temps during gaming, and I advised him to disable HT, and that actually fixed both things for him. If you're primarily gaming, with just a little bit of some of the mentioned stuff that you're planning to do at University, then I'd still recommend the i5-3570k over i7-3770, in order to save some money.
