I think of it more like buying a car, and then paying extra for a feature or getting a paint job. Sure, the car will run fine without it and get you where you need to go, but if you're going to be using it for several years anyway, if it's only a small one-time fee you might as well have some more fun out of it all the while. But to each their own.

You don't pay your dealer a monthly fee to provide your car with upgrades either so it's a very poor analogy, you already payed extra for the "paint job" through the expansion purchase.
