BMTH and Parkway Drive are the only metal I listen to, so my opinion isn't very valuable.
Opeth is not on the list, this whole question is invalid.
On this list it has to be Slayer, voted several times to be the best thrash metal album of all times. But since metal has many genres it would be hard to name a best album, but for me Slayer's thrash metal reign on blood remains to be the most iconic and influential and thus "best" album for me.
Here I am this afternoon, trying to gather music for the upcoming exam period study sessions when I realized I'm really bored with all the new stuff, I felt compelled to go dig up all the metal all-time classics I listened in the last decade. That's when an idea hit me, instead of saving everything in a .txt for later use, I'm gonna post it here, so the other 10 maybe 11 metalheads of the site can enjoy and discuss!
I used one album per band, as the list would probably be overcrowded by Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica, Priest, Death, Mercyful Fate/King Diamond et cetera. I have to say though, this list really compiles the very best of metal, you won't find anything more complete anywhere else on the interwebs!

While I know that the last part was a joke I just want to point to this thread: http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/...l-Metal-Albums (though I wouldn't say it's anywhere near complete I think it's a decent list for a gaming website)

Eh from that list probably Master of Puppets but for me personally probably Fates Warning - Awaken the Guardian or Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black.
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
Pantera - Far Beyond Driven
Hands down beat most of the albums listed in the poll in my own personal opinion.
Not to say the other albums are bad by the way, not fanboying up Pantera I'm just surprised they're not mentioned while Slipknot - Iowa is there... which personally I think is slipknots worst album with the exception of a couple of tracks, and nowhere near the par set by mentioning Master of Puppets or Reign in Blood in the poll.
Gotta be Maiden. Though I'd personally put Powerslave and Fear of the Dark just the tiniest notch above Number of the Beast.
"What's your top 200 metal albums?" would be a better thread. I can't even pick my favorite from that list as a few of the albums are just as good.
i should have put Pantera and Guardian instead ACDC and Motorhead then, so i can make it harder for you
When people talk of the "big four", that was Megadeth's era. Rust in Peace was a classic (which I voted for), but Countdown to Extinction had one of the greatest thrash title tracks of all time on it. Given Metallica's commercial success, plus Mustaine's musical talent, I still catch myself wondering what might have happened had Mustaine screwed the nut, just a little.
Oh, wait - I know.
We'd only have had one of those two amazing bands to listen to.
As for the poll, it's necessarily limited but the spread shows it's a good bit of fun. Master of Puppets rather than the black album is a strange choice, given the impact the latter had on more mainstream trends (often cited as a reason to ignore it). Are we arguing Burton was a better technician than Newsted? I still think ... And Justice For All was Metallica's best work, musically.
Was a better metal song than Harvester of Sorrow ever written?
Oh, yeah. Damn you.
Meh, rambling. Nice topic!
thanks, yes i find it interesting too
