a world of warcraft movie would be weak

if it turns into yet another action fest adrenaline on steriods rollercoaster without much human element. GAme movies have almost unanimously taken that approach, and they've sucked. Because fantasy and science fiction are so out of this world to a lot new viewers, they lose interest if they can't connect to anything strongly and a very identifiable human element is able to be related too.

Take the original star wars - what made those 3 moveis stand out to so many that came out after it? you had a mini love story going on, and some real tongue in cheek humour everyone could identify with. What is missing in almost every action moview based on a video game?> exactly that. Take the newer star wars movies. The action was really good, but no tongue in cheek humour, and the love story came across really weird, hardly natural. Which may have been the plan but you do need somethign good.

Now look at a very wellbalanced movie, Lord of the Rings, intertwined in teh epic struggle, you have realness in something small can affect something big, despite all the massive forces around with their very real power still the biggest battle is fought in the hearts and minds of men, and yes altho it was hobbits, everyone can relate to their struggle Even the perfect elves you can relate too, yet apprecaite them for being different. Intertwined in it was a love story, that came off quite well. I'm not saying the bookfs or films are the best story ever written, but the blaance was very sweet, and the moview captured and displayed that essence well

So, fo a warcraft movie to be good, you have to have all those elements, against a stunning visual background which we know exists in teh universe. Teldrassil ffs, an entire country size wise in a tree, then the dwarves in their mountains, the blood /high elves in their strange magical wonders. the diverse landascape from exotically beautiful purples, silver and pink Ashenval and nighte elven forests to the golden beauty of Quel 'thalas, - lush verdant forests PAnderia, jungles of strnagle thorns, crsytal ice waste of northrend - that's almost the easy part, it's a well balanced story though that despite all the alien looking creatures like Tauren, Orcs, Trolls etc, people can very much relate too that would make this a hit and buck the trend of disappointing video game movies

I think they missed a golden opportunity with Arthas: Rise of the Lich King. Arthas's rise from a promising young paladin to the despoiler of kingdoms and the eponymous Lich King reeks of that genre subversion which would really set Warcraft apart from things like LOTR. It's by far their strongest story so far; Anakin Skywalker leading an undead apocalypse through a world of swords and sorcery was and is a great hook.

It has all the elements of a great fantasy story, but turns most of them on their heads: the goodly royal kingdom is annihilated, the high home of the elves is sacked and destroyed, the main character becomes a straight villain protagonist, etc.

I mean, the fans' biggest fear for this movie is that people unfamiliar with the franchise will write it off as LOTR minus the substance -- that people will watch it and think, "Well, I've never seen that before. "

But eh. Maybe it'll be amazing regardless.

And honestly, that's why I think that it should take place from a Horde characters's PoV - not just because I'm pro-Horde, but because the idea of having the classic fantasy uglies and bad guys be the good guys, is not something that common in fantasy movies, so that would at least help it stand out a bit.

I doubt the movie is going to happen, at least a big screen one. Will probably end up getting an animated movie straight to DVD.

You forget one thing...Movies are a business designed to turn a profit...Example?..TMNT made a fortune when it came out....Tikets, VHS, DVD, toys , shirts...and with 10 million subs you are for sure not going to please everyone. It really doesnt matter wether its weak or whatever you think. Even if only half the subs go see the flick thats 55 million in gross revenue..Add in bringing friends bc not many go to the movies alone your at 75 million or more. Also take in effect people that dont even play this game and their dates/friends your over the 100 million mark..This movie will make money and they will probably make it either way..whether we like it or not tbh

That is pretty much what they should do yes. Any thing else will most likely be a mess of CGI and bad actors.

Well there seems to be a general internet-wide consensus that Blizzard makes mindblowingly awesome animated cinematics, so heh. If you look at any of the recent "HotS trailer" threads on this forum, you'll see that basically every fourth post is something along the lines of "OMG BLIZZARD SHOULD MAKE ENTIRE MOVIES LIKE THIS!".

Is this movie still on the boards? I thought it was dismissed ages ago. Seems to me that they missed the boat on when to release it.

It's still in the works, but yeah... It'll most likely end up right next to "Lord of the Clans" and "Starcraft: Ghost".

Should have made a Lich King story, as it was one of the only stories out there that was well-rounded and would have been interesting for people outside of the WoW community.

    Now, we'll see.

I very much disagree, I always found the Lich King story boring, bland and terribly cliché - That said, they did make a Lich King story. Most of TFT, a good portion of RoC, the entire Wotlk *and* a book version of the Arthas campaign in Wc3, so they got that covered!

I'm curious, you are aware that it takes them a year or so to make these quality cinematics, e.g. the Cataclysm intro cinematic, right?
