Warhammer 40,000. There's something about an army of clones wielding sci-fi gear that makes warfare inherently more interesting. Also, chainswords
The Witcher
Legend of Zelda
World of Warcraft
Star Wars is my favorite "Universe" also i do love the Warcraft Lore but i cant really stomach the game much anymore.
If we're including pen-and-paper RPGs, then Shadowrun's Sixth World, no question about it. Love that setting with a passion.
Yeah, they're messed with around 18ish. They ones that actually become space marines were badasses even before they got the gene seed
Anyway Sci-fi 40k definitely takes the cake. However sometimes it becomes too hopeless (damn Tyranids eating everything) for me, so Wildstar or Starwars otherwise I guess.
Fantasy is a bit tougher. The prize would have to Forgotten Realms or Warcraft, no explanation is really needed for either.
The Secret World gets a Honorable Mention.
Shhhhh, she's doing magical trig bullshit trig substitutions
Warcraft
Half life / portal
Magic the gathering
Never played it, but EVE seems interesting
I've no idea what to write here.
I'm going to go with the Secret World. Probably the most immersive world out of the games I've played, even though it's all kind of broken up.
Dark Souls, no contest.
Honorable mentions:
Elder Scrolls
Armored Core
Bioshock
Warhammer
Planescape
Fallout
Star Wars (knights of the old republic I, II)
Mass Effect
Elder Scrolls
Wouldn't say it's the greatest, but I think Kingdoms of Amalur deserves a mention for their Fae. Loved their lore and how unique they were compared to many fantasy races. At the same time, the more I knew about them the more I thought "Man, these guys suck. I'd never want to be one."
Also rather off topic, but I think you could fit so many game genres into the world from Magi: Labyrinth of Magic manga. Fighting game, dungeon crawler, RTS/TBS, even something like Civilization, it's all there.
Star Wars (which also includes the old republic era), hands down. You also have Forgotten Realm/DnD "universe". Warcraft and Elderscrolls universes are also good
