Wow, I'm sure others have mentioned but 3 is really too small a number for the large amount of RPGs available to that console. So I'll cheat and use a few made up categories to recommend to you.

Dark/grittier RPGs (not horror or anything, but RPGs with a darker feel to them than the standard)

    - Shadow Hearts 2. Recommend that you play 1 first, but 1 won't make it to this list. Very very fun overall, from the story to the gameplay to the references. Main character is definitely one of my favourites in any RPG.
    - Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (post apocalyptic type of setting - very addictive demon fusion system and gameplay requires much thought)
    - Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 - given together because it's no good playing them apart. 2 picks up where 1 deliberately leaves off.

    Fantasy RPGs (the standard stuff)
    - FF10, of course. Fun battle system, loved the sphere system and blitzball. However, hated the linearity (till I play 13...wtf) and the characters were a mix of annoying and alright. However, overall a good game, and its main villain was pretty awesome.
    - Kingdom Hearts 2. Improved on everything that 1 was, and can be played without the first 1 if you really want to. You cannot own a PS2 / emulator without having tried KH2.
    - Tales of the Abyss (great story, funny characters, fun gameplay..what's not to love?)

Something different, something interesting (games that do things differently, but were loved for it)
    - Wild Arms 5 (although 3 is better, but quite standard JRPG so I can't put that here)
    - Dark Cloud 2
    - Xenosaga 3 (although 1 and 2 are good, but 3 is the best of the series in terms of welll...everything. Very lengthy game though, be prepared!)

From what I've played I can definitely reccomend:

Final Fantasy X - even with extreme linearity and Tidus, it is a fun game
Kingdom Hearts 2 - longer, more varied and easier than original, still a great action jRPG
Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria - story has problems with pacing but it has AMAZING combat system

Why you make it so hard!!! ughh...
    well....
Final fantasy X is the final fantasy i've played through the most excluding 9, these 2 are the best final fantasy's to me.
Shadow hearts 1 and 2, these are so good that i have to put them together, and also mention 3 got rid of yuri so i never played it.
Dark cloud 2, they need to make a 3rd one, i'd buy the ps4 just for that!
edit: oh! and does anyone know if the ps3 has ps2 compatiablity (FULL ON, not like 360 where it uses an emulator)?
wanna get to playing xenosaga and stuff but every ps2 i've tried has had weak lasers or died before i could try.
they're getting pretty cheap so i may pick one up just for some good ol ps2 rpgs.

Believe it or not, I haven't played many PS2 RPG's. I need to play more. So my list might be a little odd. Plus, I played a lot of PS1 games on it too, and kind of consider them the same system in ways. I still have my PS2, just not really up for ordering games online, since good luck finding them at Gamestop nowadays.

    1. Final Fantasy 10 - If nothing else, the game was really good for introducing people to the series, because it was fairly easy. The voice acting isn't great, but I haven't really heard any games with great voice acting. Even the great Tara Strong as Rikku doesn't help it. The story was fantastic, if a little dull at times. The graphics are beautiful, even to this day. Which begs the question, why are they re-releasing it?

    2. Grandia 2 - The game translated terribly from the Dreamcast. Choppy graphics, and bugs that were seemingly never fixed. It's another game that would do well to introduce people to turn-based RPG's. The game is rather simple, and it's quite linear, so it's not a hunt for random side quest stuff like in most Final Fantasy games. I like doing that, but it helps simplify a game if needed. Again, the voice acting gets on my nerves, and, as I usually play with sound off anyway, it makes it a lot easier to do so. This game really shines in two places. First, characters. It's a nice change of pace to see the main character, Ryudo. His archtype doesn't seem to show up very often, and he and Millenia get some great and hilarious lines throughout the game. The second area is the combat system. Yes, it's turn-based, but it's an advanced system with a battlefield that has an active time style to it. When your spell goes off, and if affects an area, it hits any enemies in that area, but you have to time it because while nothing is being cast, combatants are moving around the field as you would expect during a real fight. Also, the leveling system is great. Each character has signature attacks you can power up with Special Coins you earn from each battle. You can also quip each character with an egg, which grants them spells, which you unlock and power up with Magic Coins you also earn in battle. You also find Books, that teach abilities you can equip to each character, which you also unlock and power up with coins. With this, you can customize each character, but because of their signature attacks, it doesn't feel like, say, Final fantasy 12, where whatever character you pick doesn't really matter, if only for the visual effect.

    3. Shadow Hearts: From the New World - Forgive me, as I haven't played any of the previous games (but I know I should). This game has an interesting story, set in 1920's New York 9and around the world really). The combat system plays, I believe, like the previous games, with the attack wheel (it's been awhile, can't remember the name). the only issue I had with the game was the necessity for a strategy guide/walkthrough. There is no way, not one, that you can find any of the hidden items without one. Finding the most powerful spell required that you find every other spell in the game, and a lot of them are well hidden. And it's not like, say, Final Fantasy 9, where an exclamation mark will appear above your head if you stumble upon an item. You have to know where each one is. This game features a ton of side quests to do though, and a rather diverse cast. You can't go wrong with a "ninja" named Frank, who uses random objects (like a stop sign or a cactus) as a sword, a talking cat that uses martial arts, or a vampire that turns fat or skinny based on what creatures she eats.

From a new world was ok, but it was to "happy" for my taste. I liked the first one because of his dark setting. A village of man-eating cats? an old wizard with a weakness for porn? They went for a brighter setting in convenant to, but it was still quite interesting. FTNW while having a really polished combat systems couldnt really keep my interest story wise. And the side quests where much more obvious. Gaining Seraphic Radiance required much more, than gaining her sun form. Plus they somehow ruined the Fusion System.

Understatement of the century right there, don't get me wrong, SH3 was... okay, but everything it did, SH:C did better. Ninja named Frank? I raise you a gay luchador named Joachim, he also fights using stuff he picks up off the floor, his best weapon? a Submarine, named The Nautilus . you know the fat/skinny Vampire? yeah she's Joachim's little sister, while she turns fat/skinny, he can turn invisible, into a bat or gain a butterfly mask. Talking Ninja cat? I give you a talking Warrior Wolf, who has to journey the world and fight OTHER talking warrior wolves, so he can becomes the strongest in the world. Hot Native American chick? (because lets face it... Shania was smoking hot ) I give you Lucia, the Italian Dancer. And of course we then have the main characters... FTNW Has Johnny, an annoying little boy, SH:C has Yuri Volte Hyuga, the coolest main character in any game ever, he could solo the whole FTNW cast without breaking a sweat

I could go on . Like I said, if you like FTNW, you owe it to yourself, and the gaming industry in general to try Covenant, it's just... better, on every scale, than FTNW.

Agreed. It's like 3 steps forward although you're going back in the series. Since they're unrelated stories and characters though, it shouldn't pose a problem. I couldn't bring myself to finish FTNW, I just missed Yuri and crew too much, as well as the general demon fusions, I found them more fun in SH:C.

And I can't believe I forgot Valkyrie Profile 2. That game...that game... wow. It's on par with how I feel about FF10. It has its bad points but I hardly ever notice them because IM HAVING TOO MUCH FUN GETTING ITEMS FROM ENEMY PARTS. And working out the best combos and characters and equipment and and ... yeah great game.

You have a lot to catch up on OP.

My hope for humanity has increased after seeing all of these SH: Covenant mentions. The first one was amazing as well, and I did enjoy the third, but Covenant is the classic imo.

I liked it too, though didn't play the first one and thus quite ignorantly made Lezard a core party member. Mistake. >.<

Ouch. Only 3. As someone with something like 30+ RPGs (and about 3 non rpg games) for my ps2, that is kind of a harsh requirement.

Most of the expected ones seem to pop up on everyone elses list (and great games they are too), so I will pull out a couple of Wild Cards from my library for you to comment over and spice up my list.

My 3 would go as follows:
1 - Okami - Probably one of the most visually immersive games I have ever played. Simply beautiful. (and i hear they are re-releasing it in a remastered High-Def version for ps3! Drool!)
2 - Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter - One of the few games i have ever played that is A: intentionally designed to be unbeatable on your first playthrough, and B: has the story reveal more and more depth each time you play it again.
3 - Kingdom Hearts - Yeah, it has already been mentioned, but the KH games are just plain awesome.

Honorable mentions to Dark Cloud, Disgaea, the entire Xenosaga Trilogy, Rogue Galaxy, and the .hack// games (whoever managed to make a single player MMO actually seem like an MMO deserves a slap on the back).

Honestly I didn't play many games on my PS2, but Baldur's Gate 2 was a fun although very short game.

Aye, as I said in my first post here, If nothing else could sum up the awesomeness of the MMO-C community, their taste in PS2 Era RPG's would set them above most of the internet

Tbh the whole SC series was amazing, Koudelka had it's flaws, but was worth playing, SC1 was brilliantly dark (seriously, read some of the Monster Descriptions... they're just fucking horrible) SH:C was the greatest game ever made... and then.. to phrase it in a way that the younger audience would understand
SH:C is Dark Knight, SH:FTNW is Dark Knight Rises. Taken as a game on it's own, it's great, good story, great combat/level/gearing systems, good character, the only problem with it, is that it's predecessor was so GODTIER awesome.

Also, I forgot Champion of Norrath! Me and a friend got rreeaalllll fucking high and played Champions of Norrath and Back to Arms from start to end back to back just after BtA came out. Was soooo much fun
