The US embargo against Cuba is still ongoing

    Hey everyone.

So, the Cold War ended almost 25 years ago and now that most ex-communist countries are democratic, there isn't such a big pressure to remove communism from the world. There are, however, still countries that employ it, obviously. Namely, those are Vietnam, China, North Korea and Cuba. Cuba is the only one against whom the US is currently holding an embargo, which makes it obvious that it's actually a political move (some would call it a political relic not appropriate for its age).

Not only does the US still hold an embargo against Cuba, Americans are actually forbidden from traveling to Cuba. And we're talking about a country that's arguably the least totalitarian out of the 4 countries that are still communist.

So yeah, what's your opinion on the embargo, do you think it's a good weapon against communism, do you think communism should be fought against in that way, and do you think it's a right move from the US?

    Reminder: No anti-US bashing!

the embargo is political retardation. our entire cuba policy is set by people that hated cuba so much they jumped on rafts to get here. not saying cuba doesnt have its issues, but we do business with far worse regularly. it just comes down to the policy being a line in the sand drawn 60 years ago that nobody wants to back down from

There is no political will to end it. The republicans like it because it wins them support from Florida’s Cubans and the democrats don’t care enough to pick a fight over it.

It’s a silly stance that’s based around domestic politics rather than foreign policy

Until they stop being communist the embargo should continue.

    Why?

What good is the embargo even doing? All we're doing is ruining Cuba's economy and getting nothing in return. Cuba is not a threat to anyone. The Cold War is over.

It's a pointless enterprise that does more harm than good, a relic of the Cold War that needs to be done away with.

Last time I heard, no one choose the USA as the savior of the world, releasing nations from their evil communist overlords.

And last time I heard, the USA does trading with China, a country that calls itself communist

Isn't Cuba the country where communism 'works' ? Meaning that the government actually takes good care of the population, they have one of the best free healthcare systems in the world.

Communism/socialism are evil, stupid, and pointless, but the US should be able to thrive under capitalism despite trading with countries that are under these systems, not by avoiding trade. It simply hurts both sides of the equation.

I think it's time to lift the embargo, there is no point in it anymore. Cuba's economy would grow and americans would get to buy their fine cigars.

So, if they are so capable an economy, then why should the US be compelled to change their policy, as I understand policy is set by the administration of a particular country to suit their needs and wishes. Or am I incorrect?

The embargo isn't there because Cuba has a different tax rate, if that was the reason USA wouldn't be trading with China. That idea doesn't make any sense. It's there because Cuba stole USA's property, sugar farms and whatever business USA had going on in Cuba.

No, it is set by people who had their businesses and property arbitrarily taken away, and people whose families were murdered by the communists simply for believing in democracy.

regardless, you people need to get your facts straight. The embargo isn't a real embargo, Cuba is free to trade with any country it wants, with the exception that if it wishes to purchase from the United States, it must pay in cash, not credit.

The embargo was there because Cuba made an agreement with USSR waaaaay back about some nuclear missiles. But since their is no thread of nuclear invasion anymore the embargo is pretty much the US bullying a small communist state because they are afraid of the big boys (China)

Sorry that I don't take American flag wavers seriously, I don't take flag wavers from any nation seriously, be it a dictatorship, democracy or communism.

Also no, I don't like most American media, since it sells sensationalism as truth and truth as sensationalism.

that's one way to put it. or you could say that they sided with a corrupt US puppet government. either way it happened a LONG time ago, and other places have done far worse, and we still trade/support them. the "embargo" is a dinosaur that should have died with the cold war. and since there is no embargo... where's my havana cigars? yes, they can trade freely with other countries, but we cant buy from them, which needs to end imo. they have no incentive to be friendlier towards us while we act like brats towards them

The embargo was set 2 years prior to the missile crisis. It was strengthened the same year as the missile crisis.

In all honesty I would not want anything to do with a country that threatened to make nuclear attacks on my country, especially if that country still had the same government.

I fully understand the embargo and agree with it.
