Monitor makes weird noise then goes black?

Hey guys!

So basically I started up my PC, logged in and everything was cool, opened Chrome, started browsing then all of a sudden the monitor started flickering, just dimming, and was making a sound like I could only describe as a slowly shaken maraca or the sound of a rattle snakes tail, and after a few seconds of this the screen just goes black. I tried turning it back on again and it does the exact same thing. I turned my computer off and even when I turn it on then it does the same thing, so it can't be an issue with my actual computer.

Any idea what's happening or how I can fix it?

my old monitor used to make some scary fizzle noises - turned out it was the power cable coming loose. try taking it out and shoving it back in* and see if it helps..

if that doesn't help, it sounds pretty ominous

*turn the plug off first, in case that wasn't obvious.
