In the 90's that was not Virtual Reality.

Believe me, when we have Virtual Reality like in the anime Sword Art Online it will catch on.

    You think just like me!

Can you imagine living forever in a game like SAO, with those beautiful zones where Kirito sleeps under a tree?

    It's my dream!

If it's like the PC version of skyrim, you *could* just get some of the adult only mods.... best of both!

In all seriousness, while the chip in the brain thing sounds nice, I doubt that would happen en masse for quite some time. With as much as I enjoy technology, I'm not ready for a chip in my head just to watch a new movie. There's something to be said to sit in a couch with some friends and laughing at the dumb jokes that are in movies these days.

VR's are a likely possibility, but I think perfection of 3D technology will come first. It's good, but there is plenty of room for improvement.

    Oculus Rift.

Hell, they're already making porn for it.

...Well, it's not like I would say no to it if she was hawt!

    OT: Virtual reality.

"In life, I was raised to hate the undead. Trained to destroy them. When I became Forsaken, I hated myself most of all. But now I see it is the Alliance that fosters this malice. The human kingdoms shun their former brothers and sisters because we remind them what's lurking beneath the facade of flesh. It's time to end their cycle of hatred. The Alliance deserves to fall." - Lilian Voss

Oculus Rift will be awesome, i saw yesterday the videos from CES 2013 and it's much better than i thought. If they can make it with a really good 3D, 1080P and 60 FPS in the next few years as they are saying, it will be awesome.

Screens will become a thing of the past for gaming.

Probably better implementation of current technology. Specifically Smell-o-vision or having special effects within the movie environment. Car Chases would have the smell of burning rubber, rain on the screen would result in a mist of water being sprayed on the audience. A scene in a restaurant would have all the different smells of food.

until we can mass produce and manipulate on demand holographic technology and working force fields wont get a "holodeck" type environment, Also we do not currently understand enough of how the brain works to start messing with cybernetic implants for direct connection to the net.

At this stage, it's probably like one of those very early touchscreens that needs to re-calibrated every boot-up and still lacks any form accuracy.

And I'm aware that thinkgeek has a product on sale like it, but it's highly impractical. With a phone or a tablet pc you want portability, not extra hardware to carry along, and it's probably highly unreliable due it's dependence of a flat surface.

The next step is probably going towards the eye projection/display like the Oculus Rift or the Google glasses. After that is making the input to the device more convenient, probably by taking the input device or method out of the picture and have it pick up signals directly from your brain, rather than have it rely on voice commands or a controller.
But that's all a long way off, considering how many years we've had voice recognition and how shoddy it still is.

Yep.. I don't care how next get or "hip" or awesome it is, if it needs surgery or something implanted, I'm out. Not only for principle but also because technology gets outdated soon and it would require updates, until you look like one of those aging celebrities who have gone too far with plastic surgeries..

A motion tracking camera next to the projector that's programmed to measure distance and to work off of cues within the projection. Basically the top of the projection would have some special color to tell it 'this is where the keyboard starts' and it would need to be programmed to be able to recognize when people were attempting to push down the buttons. Problem is that it would only work from one angle, meaning if you had one finger in front of the other you wouldn't have the second finger registering. Not a particularly huge problem with a keyboard, though. It could potentially use two motion trackers, one on each end of the phone, to work better, but then you'd need to program them to run in parallel.

I would say 'almost' is accurate for projected keyboards, but not for holographic.

Anyone seen the gadget show where Sansung made this "interactive window"? May be everything will become like that very soon.

Yes it is a bit like the holo keyboards and such.

Call me old fashioned, but I need pushback on a keyboard to type correctly.

The camera angle would be w/e angle you wanted, the scenes you wanted to watch are w/e you feel like participating in. This would give movies so much rewatchability. Finding easter eggs and "deleted" scenes would be fun too.

Of course this VR stuff probably works better with games, but I can see movies going that way too.
That would only work in games and simulations. What you describe is fundamentally different than a movie, i.e it's not a movie.

Like others said, Virtual Reality and Quantum Computing are the next big thing.
