Virtual reality technology that puts you inside the movie.

Imagine a movie that has one extra character every scene. A character that is meaningless to the plot, never says anything and never moves out of his place. A different such character for every scene according to the plot. And that character is the viewer in 1st person participating more or less.

Imagine war movies where you are one of the soldiers. Your alter ego does things independent of your will but you see though his eyes and the main movie action is always nearby so you can participate.

Aye. We've already gotten decent touch screens, now they just need to make the holo crap work and we're set.

I would imagine sensory stimulation via electromagnetic frequencies and all that good stuff.

Contacts.glasses with images (augmented reality) already exist and it is still part of the digital era, no real change in concept as the idea is the same as it was 100 years ago, just medium really.

Already working on that and without the aid of porn. Though not of my own choosing.

Nah, we will leave VR for five minutes and give a quickie. xD

What I want is a combination of something like the Google Project Glass with a hypersensitive ear-mounted microphone. The Project Glass tech would be shrunk down to a contact lens, or kept as a pair of glasses if you don't feel comfortable wearing the lens, and the microphone would function like a set of ear buds. The two would be able to capture video and audio, essentially recording memories. These would be uploaded to a device that only you have access to. It would take social media to the next level, with people being able to share their experiences in the purest form outside of replicating the chemical processes in the brain.

Virtual reality should be feasible pretty soon, given the level of computing power in most consumer level PC's and video game consoles. I would fully expect for the next console generation, or whatever follows after that, to have the hardware capacity required to make virtual reality come to fruition. We're already seeing something approaching VR with the Oculus Rift.

hate to break it, but this is impossible, it would be allways at the same point so, your eyeball could move around like crazy but couldn´t see whats in the top left corner ^^

the google glasses look pretty promising, guess smartphones and very small pc´s will become headsetstyle devices with maybe a processing unit in your bag or pocket

Except your contacts will always be right over the pupil so it would literally be an overlay that could change based on your eye movements. Especially if you imbed an extremly small gyroscope or something to see different eye movements. I'm not sure how something like looking up to watch a bird would change what you are looking at on the contacts, however...

I personally don't really see the appeal of virtual reality. I think augmented reality could be the next big thing; maybe not for games, but for practical purposes. You'd also have an excuse to wear Adam Jensen's shades, but remember, you did ask for them.
If you are particularly bold, you could use a Shiny Ditto. Do keep in mind though, this will infuriate your opponents due to Ditto's beauty. Please do not use Shiny Ditto. You have been warned.

We already have fully bionic arms and devices used for reading brainwaves. We honestly aren't far from cyborgs, especially as we age.

What I find coolest is something like what IBM is building for professor Hawking - a device to translate brainwaves into words. Would be awesome

But then the hawking vs einstein rap battle isn't going to be as funny.

I did enjoy that IBM had to apply a profanity filter to one of their supercomputers after it 'digested' urban dictionary.com.

You don't see the appeal of Virtual Reality? Wouldn't you like to be in, let's say, WoW with super graphics where it's actually you who uses the sword, axe, etc? Travel in your mount in Anshevale, ride a dragon in Zangarmarsh?

Its the same problem with the google glasses, I would assume. I mean I don't know a lot about them but if looking up changes what the display is displaying, then being startled and looking up will change it there too, right?

well if you insist that your eyemovement has to change what´s on the display, true, but you still couldn´t focus with contacts because it would allways be right in your few, so how could you see something slightly outside? there´s not much space left between contacts and your eyes, what´s in the middle of the contact would be in constant motion to be on paar with eyemovement + focus... sounds terrible *g*

I figured the contact would be the display, not light being beamed into your eye as (i think) the google glasses work...
