Creating a hidden, password protected True Crypt container/volume

I followed the tutorial on the website and created a separate volume that was encrypted and I was able to store files on, but it showed up as M Drive under my computer and didn't even prompt me for a password (I did set one) to access it. I've heard you can have hidden volumes disguised as some innocuous file, that when opened prompts you for the password and contains the files you want encrypted/hidden.

I wasn't able to figure this out on their website, so I was hoping someone on here might know of a guide that walks you through the process step by step.

    Any help is appreciated, thanks.

depends would it make us aid you with any criminal activities?

no personal exp with such encryption but usually a special command is used in order to show/hide such partition(s)/drive(s). (and usually hiden by default)

You sure you don't have the crypted volumes automatically mounted or something?

No criminal activity lol. My computer is on 24/7 and there are other people who could possibly access when I'm not around (they're not supposed to, but you never know). And turning it off isn't an option, so I'd like the ability to make it impossible to access certain files except for me.

setup different accounts with different levels of acces is easier. (and keep admin rights solely to your account)

I'm not sure I follow you. When I was following the tutorial it had me pick an area to save the volume. I picked inside a folder that is a bit of a pain to get to unless you know where to look. After that it had me format something and select a letter designation for the drive to be mounted to. I chose M.

That's not an option either unfortunately. Unless there's some way I can set up the computer to have the programs I run, running in the background and being completely locked out from accessing anything on the computer unless a password is entered.

Basically a program that puts a password prompt on the screen and unless you enter it you can't do anything while still letting whatever programs I might of had running still function. There anything like that?

No I mean last time I tried TrueCrypt it had an option to automatically load all crypted drives with single password, you might need to turn that off. It could even have an option to open all crypted files with just windows password, don't remember that, it's been a while...

Can't say I remember any options like that.

how come the different accounts solution isn't viable for you OP? (there are options to hide files/drives completely from other accounts etc aswell)

That's exactly how the lock system works in Windows 7.

Basically because I don't want them to be able to access the programs I'm running either. That, and logging into another account with less privileges would require me to log out of this one and close all the tabs I have open which I don't want to have to do.

    How does that work?

If you want to lock out certain programs and don't need to keep those running on background all the time you can use virtual machine and encrypt that as a single file. It's the only reasonable way to allow partial access to the installed programs on a single login.

when i took enterprise security, we theorized that the ultimate encryption was to use something similar to this, but store it on a RAID0 volume and remove one of the array drives when not in use

that way the encryption is striped and impossible to decrypt without the second half of data

OP: what you are trying to do is not impossible, but it's much more common in linux, i would suggest simply using volume encryption, and mount the volume in a folder, the volume won't show up as anything logical with a letter, and you can hide it in a common folder and name it something mundane

for what specific scenario are you using that pc that you are in need of such high demands in usage and yet the need to hide stuff? (pc in the wrong place or sheer lack of hardware of other people?)

    @cyanotical, damm that's overkill encryption.

It's pretty much downloading 24/7 which is why I can't just log off to prevent people from accessing the computer since it will halt the downloads.

That's kind of what I did. I picked a hard to find folder and it created the file which I named volume and made it large enough to store all the files I wanted. But it then had me pick a letter designation and mount it, similar to your C drive, D drive, and so on. Except after mounting it and choosing M as the letter designation, I was able to transfer files to it, but it never asked for a password. I was able to just open it up and access the files.

too much grey area tbh, what kind of files (size wise? how big is your bandwidth, why is halting not an option?)
also if people were to use the pc while downloading (even in the background) it would still affect their usage aswell if they were to use the internet.

    downloading porn 24/7?

as already stated, in win 7 you can just go to the login screen without logging off and stopping your programs, thus preventing others to access them depending on the accounts they can login with

Size of what I want hidden? It varies. Nothing really consistent. The internet is bad so I pretty much have it downloading all the time which is why I don't want to have to stop the downloads. And other people's internet being affected isn't an issue.

Lol, no. Just movies/shows/ect. So if I just use the windows key + L command to get to the login screen it will still download in the background?

So you're basically downloading donkey porn or something else embarrassing on home computer 24/7 and dont want anybody else using the computer to know it?

Best way to do it is downloading into hidden folder with some torrent program that runs as a background service even when you log off. If those don't stay hidden on your home PC, you're screwed.
