I helped someone out, this is what I got for it

A stolen wallet and mobile phone.

    Let me explain briefly.

I was walking around the park when I saw someone falling into a frozen lake. I immediately ran towards him and helped him out, but I had my very big and impractical winter jacket on, so I threw it on the snow next to the lake in order to have free movement. Inside my jacket were my wallet and my phone.

Now, I wasn't alone. Right after me 5 other people came as well and helped us out, too. Nothing serious happened, the guy was totally okay... but when I came back to get my jacket I noticed that my phone and my wallet were missing.

I mean, for real? I go and try to fucking save someone down there and whoever was responsible for this though it would be a good idea to steal my stuff?

Fuck society. I'm really pissed off right now... what do people like that think? Do they even think or do they just act out of pure evil?

Best of it, nobody saw anything. At least nobody wanted to say anything. I reported it to the police which I called directly to the scene, but nobody wanted really to wait there so I ended up being alone with one other guy... even the guy from the lake got escorted by the paramedics. He said he's sorry but he couldn't help me since he didn't see anything. But he gave me his contact details just to make sure.

Police said that they realistically can't do anything about it since I didn't get the personal information from everyone who was there... like that's the first thing I think of after all of that crap.

    Best.day.ever.

because the value of a human life is clearly worth less than a cell and a wallet....you are really an "awesome" individual

I'm sorry to hear that this happened to you OP but you can't judge society by an act of one stupid individual. Look on the bright side, you saved a life and those people will forever be grateful to you and your valuables can be replaced.

I don't see how this is related to helping the one man in the lake. He didn't steal it someone simply saw the opportunity to steal something, which is fairly common. I doubt the thief even cared you saved someone.

Edit: it's no society it's one asshole.

If there were only 5 other people there then you should've caused a scene and gone after their pockets one by one by force if necessary. I'm sure those who were innocent would not have minded and they propably would've helped you if someone didn't cooperate.

Why would one keep their wallet in a jacket?

Well, yeah. I am still unbelievably disappointed. I have to get a new ID, new bank cards, 40€ in cash lost, membership cards for clubs and my university....

I am pretty sure it was no one of that group. I just doubt it. I guess someone sneaked in, searched through my jacket and ran away while we were taking care of Mr. Ihavetowalkonhalffrozenlakes.

Why would one keep their wallet in a jacket?
Insides of my jacket are easier to reach than my back pockets. The jacket is huge.

I just told the full story more or less. It made everything more dramatic.

And to address your edit: Actually, I don't even think so anymore. This "one asshole" thing happens so often that you can't say "it's just that one guy". I don't know any specific numbers, but I am sure if you give 100 people the chance to steal something, the majority of people would do it.

yeah i love being assaulted by random people claiming to me missing their wallet. thinking like this is how the patriot act got passed.

to the OP its doubtful the police would have done anything unless you caught them red handed and detained them yourself or had reliable witnesses. even if you got everyone's info all they would is do some follow up questioning at most which the culprit would just deny taking it. its far more likely though that who ever took it grabbed it and left the scene long before you went back for you jacket.

I disagree, in fact I think that most people would rather help.

One guy took advantage of your selflessness for personal gain. Despicable, but society did not wrong you, the thief did. These people actually shun the society you are a part of as a whole because it will not accept them for their nefarious deeds.

Looks like you got hit with the old Alaskan Shuffle. The fake pretends to fall into a lake (this situation will never happen in real life) and distances themselves far enough away from shore to the point where the mark (victim: you) has to remove important stuff from your person. The Side-hand then comes up and pinches your gear while 100% of your attention is focused on the fake.

The oldest con in the book.

People don't just fall into lakes, or randomly find an envelope with 20 $100 bills inside sitting on the sidewalk, or have a really great deal on a set of speakers they didn't install for a rich client.

Sorry, but you got scammed, and as much as it sucks, lesson learned.

It actually does happen. In wintry climates it's a not uncommon enough tragedy, for people to step on ice that isn't as thick as they think it is, and end up drowning in frigid water, because it usually takes less than a minute for the person to become so numb from the cold that they are unable to tread water, and about 5-10 minutes for the person to die of hypothermia if they somehow manage to keep their head above water.

But if you go through the ice, even if your arms are holding on to the ice above, your chances of actually being able to climb out of it without help, with your lower body submerged is slim-to-none.

EDIT: This would also make a really stupid con, considering if it takes more than a minute for somebody to take the bait, you could die.

Edit: Sad to it trough OP, fucking sucks this world.

What idiot would keep something in their front pockets lol you would look like a right twat with bulging pockets.

Inside jacket pockets are there for a reason.

Point is, thief saw opportunity, you should have been more careful, if you had time to take off your jacket the guy really wasn't in that much danger. If 5 other people showed up you could have let them help and just called paramedics yourself.

    Lesson learned, cunts are everywhere.

I know that won't help you with your current stolen smartphone but if you buy another smartphone make sure to install one of those apps that allow you to track your phone from pc.

    Yeah fuck people.

A woman I knew had an abusive husband and wanted to leave with her kids. I gave her 25k so she could move out and pay rent while she gets established and finds work etc and she reported me to the police saying I was physically harassing her and tried to get more money out of me...

Found out she was working for cash in hand while on benefits and told the police. Maybe when she gets out she'll think twice.
