Determing if a card is good for Multimedia or Gaming

Is there a good site/list or a good way to tell if a Graphics card is aimed more at gaming vs one being aimed more at day to day/multimedia usage.

http://www.club-3d.com/index.php/pro...imedia.en.html works for that, both for AMD and Nvidia cards.

Well, a good rule of thumb for current/new cards is:
    - Below $100 it's a multimedia card
    - above $100 it's a gaming/3d card.

The dividing line is somewhat smudgy, but you get the idea... (You can get a Radeon 7750 for $90, which i would label as the smallest gaming card from AMD)
Sure, you can run games with cheaper cards. And depending on the performance hunger of the game it might even run fairly well. But a gaming card for me is something that can run basically every game currently out there with playable framerates, although only with low details for some titles.
Why do something simple, when there is a complicated way?
    Ryzen 7 2700X | BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 | 16GB DDR4-3200 | MSI X470 Gaming Pro | MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G | 500GB / 750GB Crucial SSD
Fractal Define C | LG 32UK550 | Das Model S Professional Silent | CM Storm Xornet

All video cards are really 'multimedia' cards... I really don't know what one would be that isn't. Unless it was like some 16mb USB->VGA dongle. You simply don't need a powerful card for multimedia. You do for gaming.

For Nvidia any thing below x50 is a media card, for AMD anything below x750 is a media card.
    Intel i5-3570K @ 4.7GHz | MSI Z77 Mpower | Noctua NH-D14 | Corsair Vengeance LP White 1.35V 8GB 1600MHz
    Gigabyte GTX 670 OC Windforce 3X @ 1372/7604MHz | Corsair Force GT 120GB | Silverstone Fortress FT02 | Corsair VX450

Are you looking to buy a multimedia card or are you looking for a gaming card? A good and cheap multimedia card would be the geforce GT640 as it gives pretty good quality 3D as well as being able to handle light gaming. Oh, the nvidia multimedia cards are GT while the gaming cards are GTX, for AMD all the cards below x7xx are considered multimedia cards. All cards with x7xx or more are considered gaming cards. (after 6xxx series)

thanks. no the issue came up when a co worker asked me about a 620 card and i couldnt tell him if it would meet his needs.
i am considering a new card to replace my 2 570's since i havent been able to resolve the crashing video card drivers. well replace if m upcoming reformat doesnt resolve the issue.

If you want to replace your current setup without dropping too much in performance you are looking at getting either a GTX 680 or a Radeon 7970.

    nVidia:

x10, x20, x30 cards are only good for DVD/Bluray playback.
x40 and x50 cards are only good for gaming on low settings/low resolutions
    x60, x60ti, x70, x80 cards are proper gaming cards.

    AMD
    x400, x500, x600 cards are only good for DVD/bluray playback (e.g. HD 6450, HD 6570, HD 6670)
x700 cards are only really good for gaming on low settings/low resolutions (e.g. HD 7750, HD 7770) (exception: on the HD 5000 series cards, the 5770 is equivalent to what a 7870 is nowadays and the 5870 was the top-end single-GPU card)
    x800, x900 cards are proper gaming cards (e.g. HD 7850, HD 7870, HD 7950, HD 7970)

doesnt solve the vid card drivers crashing.. something about the 3xx.xx series drivers from nvidia just suck when it comes to the 570's before i reformat i plan to go back to the driver version that came with the cards to see if it resolves the issue. as aside from wiping my system rolling back is the only thing i havent tried. altho i will say with the 310.70 (i think thats whats installed for me right now cant check) it does happen alot less.

i'll figure it out eventually tho
