SSAO effect, it was added with 5.0 I believe.

It's just an added graphical effect pretty much. If you don't like it, you can turn it off, but it's nothing to worry about.

Indeed, it even appears on the "low" SSAO setting. Just turn SSAO off completely for it to disappear!

When i first time tested that SSAO, i thought "so THAT'S why new games look like messy shit". Not many "new" technologies make graphics more "realistic", instead of adding "wannabe-coolness".

Well they're not too bad when they work. For you, they don't work. It shouldn't be spiky like that, but smooth slightly darker area ( makes shadows look a little better).

I think the "spikiness" is just due to artifacts from the JPEG compression. They work fine for me, look exactly how they're meant to per every screenshot in existence, and I still think they make the game look crappy(er).

It's meant to provide a rudimentary ambient occlusion (which DOES make shadows look more realistic) for relatively little GPU processing budget.

Basically, SSAO is a "cheap" (processing-wise) form of ambient occlusion. I say "cheap" because it operates in the screen-space - meaning it can't be applied to individual objects, it's a process done on the entire scene without any sanitization. Thus, while it may visibly improve shadows around buildings and static objects, it also unfortunately has the effect of adding occlusion in places where it really shouldn't be - such as around your character.

Ambient occlusion *should* be around your feet, for example, and an inverted occlusion around your upper body presuming the light of the background is lighter than you are, while still providing accurate occlusion where the base of buildings enhance the shadows of the ground in front of it, etc. However, this kind of ambient occlusion is very processor intensive and basically can't be used for real-time processing.

SSAO provides a means of doing ambient occlusion on a far wider ranger of systems, without impacting performance much at all, as it's basically a "dumb" pixel shader rather than a smart object shader (ray-tracing is required to do it properly). There are methods of removing false occlusion from SSAO (such as around your character) but again, these require more processing power and simply aren't implemented (at present) in the WoW engine.

    For comparison:

Google Images - AMBIENT OCCLUSION - for pre-rendering

SSAO adds shadows and depth very cheaply to a scene. It uses data generated as a side effect by the rendering engine (the depth buffer), and applies maths to that to work out where shadows ought to go. It then combines that with the rest of the scene.

It doesn't always work, and if you pay attention to it the shadows move with the camera, but most of the time it looks pretty good.

    thanks that helped a lot

the SSAO also explains why my flying mounts wing shadows appear on water miles away if i angle my camera at it from a diagonal angle

I turned it on, and didn't notice a single difference except the FPS drop.
Worthless feature is worthless. Meanwhile, I still don't have a slider for Voice volume only...
