Why is gambling illegal in parts of the US?

    See thread title

I'm just curious and have never been interested in gambling until recently.

When unregulated, illegal gambling takes money from the victim and gives it to those with an unfair advantage. A more methodical version of stealing.

Mostly local and state laws. In my state we have the state lottery that is it. There are some "hidden" video poker places that are not to hard to find out about or get into, from what I have heard some of their owners are high or connected in local government.

South Carolina used to have video gaming but they kept changing the laws and finally drove it all underground. One of the big reasons given was that people became addicted and gambled away all their money.

Its addictive and destructive and can breed an environment one could reasonably not want an area to have.

There should be one state with legal gambling, pot and prostitution. I shall name it "New Disneyland ".

Sounds like the same logic used against illegal drugs, except gambling is less harmful.

Far easier to control as it by its nature tends to require a significant number of people.

I could see that making gambling legal everywhere would in the end reduce the allure of it and hurt the large casinos

I suppose that happens to a lot of people, but it is consensual no? I think most drugs should be legal so I'd feel like a hypocrite if I thought gambling should be. I mean, I gambled once at the Oneida casino in Wisconsin and had fun but never gambled again.

Just like countries with lower drinking ages reduces the allure or social capital of drinking I would imagine.

I don't see how someone can call actions made out of addiction consensual in a meaningful way in this context. I'm not saying there is a reason to ban it, just that there is a pretty good reason to control it.

Because a lot of people see it as a societal degenerate. In my home town, Pawn Shops are illegal for the same "reasons."

Gambling should be illegal because it's pretty much scamming. Scams are illegal, so...

It was always considered a vice here, probably should be.

But... you have an erosion of that understanding when all the states realized they could be the casino and set up the lotteries under false pretense.
The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities.

Once you are addicted it isn't consensual, but if you initiate the process to become addicted that it your fault unless you were coerced.

Why can't I gamble if the government can gamble through the fed?

Its entirely possible to not know you have a predilection for gambling until you're in over your head. Especially since gambling usually accompanies booze that casinos are more than happy to make available.
