You can't be serious.
Buying from an established, accredited breeder means you know your dog's bloodlines, and likelihood of any hereditary diseases. It means you will know the dog's temperament and tendencies.
Yes, you should always consider pound dogs and mutts, but just because you bought a dog from a breeder doesn't mean you aren't a dog lover. Don't be stupid.
I have a service dog (mobility issues, PTSD, etc.) who originally came from a shelter. I also have two pugs who come from my family's pug lines.
Yes, we're some of those evil breeders. We have one, or at the most, two whole litters every year. We show our dogs at AKC shows. We research potential buyers and have extensive contracts which do the best we can to guarantee the dogs we place out will have good lives. We make an estimated profit of -$12,500 each and every year. Yes. That's negative $12,500 every year. Quite obviously, the family is not in this for the money. We do it because we love the pug breed, and can ensure that every pug we place is healthy and happy.
Did I mention healthy? Yes, our pugs are healthy. We've long since bred out the tendencies pugs have towards breathing issues (although I'm fairly sure all the angels and demons above and below can't breed out the snore). We have our dogs tested for hip, elbow and shoulder problems and don't breed them if they don't pass with flying colors. We don't breed any of our bitches past their fifth birthday, and often place them (for free) in loving pet homes - if we're not keeping them as pets for ourselves or our family members.
So please, tell me again how evil every breeder out there is. I've always wanted to be an evil genius planning to take over the world, this might be my only shot at it!
Got myself a puppy when I graduated high school. Shada is almost 6 now.

Thanks! They've always been my favorite dog and while I like almost every dog I definitely prefer big dogs. Something about the big stupid goof balls is just endearing to me over the small little shits that you could crush under a tennis shoe. My childhood dog was a golden cocker spaniel which was an amazing dog who went blind when she was about 10, lived to 17. As the cocker got older she had more frequent accidents so we started keeping her in smaller areas of the house, eventually the German shepherd picked up on this and actually used to herd her back into our kitchen/family room area. The cocker was pretty amazing too. Blind as a bat and used to find me wherever I was in the house and put her paw on my leg asking to be fed at the exact same time every night.

I got a mini schnauzer, the previous owner was about to send him to a dog shelter since he couldn't find anyone to give it to, until i met the guy during work.
The little puppy is 3 years old now, and i and the entire family absolutely love him, im really glad i took him as it's known what happens in dog shelters after a while, and just the thought of what would be the fate of this little guy makes me cry.
Yeah, I've told my wife that the next round of pups we get (though I love my dogs and hope they last for a long time), we'll each just get what we want. She'll get a smaller dog (she'll get a Corgi, knowing her), and I'll get my large dog (always had a soft spot for Rottweilers and Irish Wolfhounds). Win-Win.

r.i.p. alleria. 1997-2017. blizzard ruined alleria forever. blizz assassinated alleria's character and appearance.
i will never forgive you for this blizzard.
I can understand. Our dogs have really caused us to stress about bills at times (our oldest had to go to a specialist for a heart issue), but I don't think I'd want to do it any other way. These little guys have really just had too much of a positive influence on my life to care about the money.
I think people may be missing what you mean by this. The whole idea of going to a breeder when there are dogs being out down because of overcrowding in shelters is ignorant.
I have nothing against pure bred dogs, but supporting breeders when the option to adopt is available could be considered cruel...
I adopted a beagle 8 years ago. He's like a child with ADD, and he loves to smell/eat EVERYTHING, but I still love him.

^^^ That's him ^^^
When was the last time you noticed a perfectly healthy dog hold an opinion like 'Yeah; life's just too much, dude... Give me the syringe; make me see pretties as I doze off forever. Enough's enough!'
Because that's what euthanasia is all about. It's voluntary. When my last dog died, he got the syringe... He was very, very sick, and he even calmed down when the vet filled the thing. His behaviour at that point warranted the term 'euthanasia;' with that much pain, I can imagine he was fed up with all of it.
Killing a dog because he's a drain on resources is not euthanasia. It's killing a dog.
Just wanted to make that clear.
My mom has a golden retreiver, my dad has a golden retreiver. When I get my house I will have 2 golden retreivers. Awesome dog
I am fine with adopting, but this same scenario could easily be applied to having kids of your own or adopting them. People aren't evil for wanting a new purebred, and people aren't holy for wanting a shelter dog. It's a decision that I would hope no one takes lightly, as brash decisions help lead to the over crowding of shelter pets in the first place.
we just post not enough of these happy feelings posts. this one makes me smile again after reading most of the times misery posts....
They're delicious.
So every parent that doesn't adopt and has their own kid is a cruel person? There's limits to everyone's charity and just because I went out and treated myself to a couple beers and some chicken tenders at a nearby bar doesn't mean I'm being cruel because I didn't donate the money to starving kids in Africa and eat ramen instead. I bought my GS from a breeder because I wanted to raise my own from a pup and I couldn't find one in a shelter nearby me at the time. Not to mention the breeder I got my dog from my aunt knew very well and every single one of her shepherds were healthy and good tempered. You adopted a dog, I donate my time. So while you pop in once every 10 years to get a new dog I'll be there helping take care of em while they wait. Shelter dogs are a risk sometimes and I don't blame people at all for not wanting to take it both in time and money and temperament. While I'm glad your dog worked out for you I've had more than one dog adopted by people I knew that had to be taken back because of aggression issues.
Adopting from a shelter is a great thing, don't taint it by acting like the hybrid drivers from the smug episode of south park.

I love dogs. Had one ever since I was a kid. Except now that I have to live in the city for a few years. I just don't want to put a dog to the torture of living in such a small space as an apartment. But when I get back to the countryside I will definitely get a new one.
PS: Something that annoyed me though in the first post; don't compare them to humans. Their loyalty mostly comes from their survival instincts not rational thought. So don't blame humans for being able to think independently and some times make the wrong choices as a result. Both dogs and humans can be amazing. No need to compare them

Many breeders give them away for free.. You're really so high and mighty that you'll look down on anyone that doesn't go to a dog shelter to get a dog? You're one of these people that also give half your income to charity then? HUMAN charity? And look down on everyone that doesn't?
Please don't be arrogant and nasty.
