    [Anime] Women and Anime/manga

So after recently getting my gf into anime/manga she has come to me with expectations of a good female role. Which leaves me puzzled. I couldn't think of a good female.. being that most of the anime/manga I've personally read. The only GOOD female characters I can even think to show her is....(*Note* I wanna say I've watched/read more than 100 different anime/manga)

Maka (Soul eater) Lt. Hawkeye/Olivier Armstrong (FMBA) Haruko Haruhara (FLCL) Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop)

so basically i need some recommendations on series with some CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK, females. And I'm not talking about bad female characters. Like...

The entire female cast (Fairy Tail) Every female in (Naruto) Lucy (Elfin Lied)

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure at this point I'm gonna have to watch more Shojo to keep her interest in this medium.

    Princess Mononoke, bam!
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
Entire cast of Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
    Asuka - Neon Genesis Evangelion.
    Kurisu - Stein;Gate.
Haruhi - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
    Chidori - Fullmetal Panic (Fumoffu).
    Squid Girl.
May and Rally - Gunsmith Cats.

Its hard to pinpoint females without knowing what genre to look for in particular :|

Show her anything Ghibli and she will love anime and manga.

Thinking about it, Miyazaki is such an obvious feminist that literally every one of his films has a likeable female lead.

This is very very true.... I never considered him a feminist... I just always felt he was one of few people who could write a women to be more than fodder, and tits.

Black Lagoon is a good one as well. Revy is a strong, capable female, filling the usually male driven "gun user" role. There are also a number of smaller female roles, all of which are good strong characters.

plus it helps the show is awesome
Reading A Song of Ice and Fire is like playing with an adorable puppy, then someone comes up out of nowhere, shoots the puppy and punches you in the face.

Stands in front of 100 enemies with 10% health left "Myeh, I'll save my potions for when I REALLY need them." - every rpg player ever.

The first one I thought of was Balsa from Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. And it's a plus because she uses a spear instead of a cliche bow or sword.

Maybe you could also consider Nyaruko? Cause she be beastmoding everybody.

Maybe in the first season, but she's still overshadowed a lot and is pretty one dimensional. In the second half she's as generic as damsels in distress can be and she may as well be an entirely different character.

Except that he quite obviously is a feminist.
Miyazaki has been called a feminist by Studio Ghibli President Toshio Suzuki, in reference to his attitude to female workers.[10] This is evident in the all-female factories of Porco Rosso and Princess Mononoke, as well as the matriachal bath-house of Spirited Away. All of Miyazaki's films are populated by strong female protagonists that go against gender roles common in Japanese animation and fiction,[11] from pirate captains to industrialists. Even in lighter films such as Kiki's Delivery Service, all of the leading characters are professional women such as artists (Ursula), bakers (Orsono), fashion-designers (Maki) and witches (Kiki and Kokiri).

I agree. I don't watch much anime, but I liked this one instantly.

And that is coming from someone who watches anime maybe once a year.
