Some of the generalizations in this thread are absolutely ridiculous. Watching anime does not make you into a creep. >_>

However, people need to learn how to keep things to themselves. Quite frankly, I've seen anime fans act like they just met Jesus, preaching about it at school and stuff, and it's not pretty. Hopefully it doesn't happen very often.

im not judging them, but i can see why people think its weird
yeah the hardcore naruto fans were something back when it was really popular. havent really seen anything like that before but i guess the other popular animes didnt really have anything clothing wise that was cheap like naruto did with the headbands. imagine how many kids would be wearing goku outfits if they were really cheap to make O_O

Being weird is not a bad thing.
Being normal is being pretty boring most of the time.

So even if I'm pretty casual with anime, I give people the benefit of the doubt, there's some weird anime's out there that I can not even begin to understand, but that's allright, it hurts noone. To me it's no less weird thene the guy dreaming about lord or the rings or star wars, or ponies in my case.

Growing up completly is so overrated, besides, video games shared the same kind of stereotype.

Depends, all my friends are geeks, so it's anime videogames and ponies all over the place on facebook for me.

We are living in a age where grown men watch my little pony a remake of a 30 year old show designed for little girls, and 30 year old girls watch movies about vampires that sparkle in the daylight
I wouldnt be worried about anyones opinion about watching anime as weird, remember anyone that use to play games was a social outcast let alone somthing like Wow now its basically mainstream
If everything I do is wrong then by god ill do it right

Well the only thing I know of that goes over the line for me is people that married videogame/anime characters.
If some guy wants to run with his arms behind his back, dressed up as goku or naruto let him, I don't see the harm.

If he enjoys it, good for him for not letting others people's judgement rule his life.

Well yeah, but allot the flak bronies get is because of the previous once, it's not a "remake" as in the sence it doesn't share the story, just some names. Not comparable beyond the fact it's about peacefull cartoonhorses.

I wouldn't recommend the older once eighter.

As someone who really does not like anime, except for a rare few (by which I of course mean a couple of the Ghibli ones), I can sort of understand the stigma of it all. Just to clarify, I don't care what you watch and it would be fairly shallow of me to judge you on it, I watch some awful rubbish. I think a lot of it comes from the content of it, I don't think you can compare Dexter to Death Note. A lot of these animes are pretty grim, as far as Dexter goes the extreme is simply a far off shot of a guy sticking a knife into someone's chest. Yeah, it's creepy, but it's not the kind of gore that you get in some animes (not all, of course). Also, many people see it as perverted, the schoolgirls in tiny skirts, the giant breasts, and the genre of porn that I won't go into etc. I don't agree with that personally, there's very few TV shows that don't use sex in some way, and you can't judge anime watchers on that style of porn any more than you can judge people who watch Frasier for normal porn. It's just the connoitations I think.

Essentially, it's just another thing, like WoW, that people who don't like it will judge you on. If you enjoy it, don't let it bother you, we've all been playing WoW long enough to have learnt to just get on with it.

Humans will hate each other for any reason whatsoever. They will also find some way, any way, to make themselves better than other people in their own mind. To increase their social standing and move up the hierarchy.

It's not a problem limited to only Anime. Gaming, films, sports... Anything at all can be a reason to be belittled and cast down the social ladder. Sure, there are some hobbies which are more generally socially acceptable, but at the same time... How many Anime fans (or gaming, or whatever) hate people who like sports JUST because they like sports?

It's human nature to find some way, any way, to prove to yourself that you are better than everyone else. To want to move yourself up the social ladder and improve your standing with your peers. Survival of the fittest, no?

If you identify yourself as part of a group of people who like anime, that's the audience you're engaging with, and that makes it easier for you.

Eh, fuck it, if people are like that I don't even want them as friends.

It's sad that prejudices are so high, luckily I'm studying Digital Media currently, so there's a lot of other "wierdos" in my class, but in elementary school I would have been dead, that's for sure, and what a surprise, turned out they weren't real friends.

Don't watch anime though, but my main interests are music, cartoons (and not fucking sitcoms) and Nintendo games.

I listen to heavy metal, so strangers usually give me a wierd look, especially old women. I also constantly have to hear people say "but it's nothing but noise". I don't listen to death metal, which is what they deem noise, I listen to Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden has to be one of the most musicially adept people in the music business, that certainly isn't just noise.

Cartoons, do I even need to explain? There's basically no one outside of the Digital Media world that hasn't asked me why I watch it, and if I watch stuff like Ed, Edd n' Eddy and such. Yes, I do watch it, there's not a single thing I know more about than My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, well maybe Metallica, but still.

And then there's Nintendo games, I love Kirby, I know all too much about Pokémon, Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time, and once again, I'm not allowed to. I once had some friends home from school when I was in elementary school, when I couldn't grasp what friends were, they basically looked at my Wii games, saw Mario, and asked me what the hell that was. Their argument was that games need to have blood in them, and to this day, I don't think I've heard a thing more stupid in my life.

In short, prejudice sucks, but if you find the right friends to hang out with you're gonna have a way better time than the average teenager who goes out drinking every friday and saturday has. Heck, I'm more happy than at least 90% of those kind of people I know, and I don't even drink, think about that for a moment.

So you call people retarded, because you hate them for hating anime? That sounds retarded.
If someone doesn't like something - doesn't make them retarded.

I think it's the mentality of western culture that it's weird to watch cartoons not as a children. It's slowly changing with more and more animation movies coming out in western culture that are acceptable to watch at any age, like Disney/Pixar and even Miyazaki movies.

What a lot of western culture doesn't realize is anime is like the Western's Hollywood or TV dramas. Instead of actors/actresses they have VA's and animators. You can find all the different types of genre's in anime that you do any other type of film, yet many still believe it to be something only kids should watch. Why? I don't know why. Animation in and of itself isn't childish, it's only what people do with the animation that can be deemed childish, and the western market does it far more then the eastern market does.

One thing I can say for sure is there are as many rapists/child molesters/murders/buffalo bill's that watch sports, have a job, go out for drinks with friends, or watch Hollywood flicks as there are people who watch anime. More even just because of the amount of people who do all the rest then watch anime.

Anime attracts people like that just as much as sports does or any of the rest.

My objection to anime is solely the poor drawing. Especially anime-films...

Some of the animation I've seen far exceeds that of any western animators, even Pixar. Have you seen any of Miyazaki's films? They might have a far different style, and not that gloss that western animation does, but it is far more beautiful, well drawn, and far more heart is put into it. There are still some shows that are poorly drawn though, just like there are some cartoons that are poorly drawn.
