    Motherboard Question

So when it comes to motherboards, other than being able to take it out of the case I hardly know a thing about them.

I currently have a ASRock 970 Extreme3 motherboard and I'm planning on swapping my HD Radeon 6950 and AMD FX-8120 CPU for a GTX 670 and a i7-3770k. I was wondering if I'd also have to replace the motherboard for this to work.

I tried to google it but I couldnt find a definitive answer other than the fact that everyone that seems to have it uses AMD and I would rather make sure before I dish out another $200.

The CPU you want to buy is a completely different socket, so yes, you will need a new motherboard with that CPU.

You'll have to change the motherboard as well, the CPUs use different sockets.

You need a Socket 1155 motherboard for that Intel CPU, preferably one with a Z77 chipset if you want to be able to overclock by using the unlocked multiplier of the CPU.

You really don't need to get such an expensive motherboard unless it has some specific feature you really want.

Yes, Each motherboard has a socket type AMD chipsets have differing pin setups than Intel Boards. If you tried to insert an Intel CPU in an AMD board you would destroy at least the CPU if not both. If you look at the following picture you see the circled LGA numbers these are the Socket numbers and you can only put a CPU with that number in it.

Oh okay, can anyone give any recommendations with the planned config I have in the OP? I'd only need one with a sound card and I only use two RAM slots and one HDD

It all depends on how much you want to spend, you can get the really cheap z77 motherboards such as:

    http://pccasegear.com/index.php?main...ducts_id=20450
    http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/45274-z77-pro3

Or you can take a step up to:

    http://pccasegear.com/index.php?main...ducts_id=19867

    Change to Australian stores instead.
